Publisher's Summary

A powerful and prescient thriller from the million-selling author of I'll Keep You Safe, Coffin Road and The Blackhouse.

A reporter with no fear.

Brussels, 1979. Jaded Edinburgh journalist Neil Bannerman arrives in the capital of European politics intent on digging up dirt. Yet it is danger he discovers when two British men are found murdered.

A child with no father.

One victim is a journalist, the other a Cabinet Minister: the double assassination witnessed by the former's autistic daughter. This girl recalls every detail about her father's killer - except for one.

The man with no face.

With Brussels rocked by the tragedy, Bannerman is compelled to follow his instincts. He is now fighting to expose a murderous conspiracy, protect a helpless child and unmask a remorseless killer.

Keeps you hanging right to the end

I have grown to admire and enjoy Peter May's work but this was the most fulfilling of all the books I have listened to so far. The grey chill of Brussels, the jostling of competitive reporters, the pressures of international politics and the concise descriptions of locations brought this story to life in my imagination.

Peter Forbes is an excellent reader of Peter May's stories. Sometimes, you even forget he is there!

Excellent.

Disappointed

I'm sorry to say I'm completely at odds with previous reviewers.

This is a reissue of an early book and, for me, it really shows. I'm giving up at chapter 12 because I don't particularly like the characters and not much has happened although a fair amount has been telegraphed. The frequent changes of point-of-view are clunky and distracting. Occasionally there is a beautifully turned phrase that hints at the master author May will become but it is not enough to make me want to persevere.

The narration is as good as ever but the material just isn't up to it.

I've loved so many of Peter May's books and I'll still be looking forward to the next one despite my disappointment this time round.

Such a good read!

This book was worth the wait, Peter May has lost none of his touch to convey the emotions and machinations of his characters. At times I felt frustration and anger toward Bannerman, but all the while knowing that his actions completely fitted with man he was. I do hope that there will be other books continuing his story alongside that of his journalistic investigations.

Another wonderful listen

Great duo - Peter May’s literary skills combined with Peter Forbes narration, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book.
A revision of an earlier novel which is set in Europe rather than in Scotland but with the main character being Scottish. It’s an easy to listen to, good thriller. Highly recommended.

Up to standard

A super book in every way, it was a little dated, as Peter May says in the foreword, it was one of his earlier books and has been resurrected, there were no mobile phones and a lot of smoking in today's forbidden places, however, this did not detract in any way from the quality of the writing.
The characters were likeable and believable, the story was excellent. All in all a super book brilliantly read by Peter Forbes.

Last Peter May book I will read

Well it’s the end of the road for me and Peter May. I’ve read every book and I really think he should of stopped after Lewis Trilogy. This should definitely not have been resurrected. Peter Forbes unfortunately sounds like Enzo throughout this! The story is very lame. The main character has very few redeeming features and I just can’t agree that the glowing reviews here. Sorry Mr May the end of the line for me!! Pretty awful.

Well worth republishing

This is an early Peter May and the central character I felt was probably a forerunner of Enzo. Thoroughly good thriller with excellent characters. As always a delight to listen to a good Peter May tale well read by Peter Forbes.

Early Peter May A Winner

I was a bit worried that this early book wouldn’t be as good as more recent work but decided to trust May’s own judgement. I wasn’t disappointed. That evocative style of writing was evident as always. A central character who is flawed and not easy to like but whose tale still draws you in and keeps you enthralled to the end. Thoroughly enjoyable

A writer who improved with time

As a recent release of one of Mays original publications, it is obvious his writing skills got better over time.... I found this a bit of round and round story trying to find its conclusion. But the literary skills of May and the narration of Forbes Still held me til the end

Political Corruption Never Changes

All humans have faults, but mostly we struggle against our faults to become more caring people. In the world of politics that process seems to get turned on it’s head, people go in with high ideals and the system relentlessly lures them into corruption. Same applies to the media. Beautifully illustrated in this narrative.
