Publisher's summary

Award-winning science-fiction mastermind Kenneth Johnson blends epic adventure, romance, and evocative drama into an intense supernatural thriller rooted in one of the great untold legends of human history.

New York City, New Year's weekend, 2001. Jillian Guthrie, a troubled young journalist, stumbles onto a tantalizing mystery: the same man, unaged, stands alongside Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and Gandhi in three different photographs spanning eighty-five years of history.

In another part of town, Will - an enigmatic thirty-three-year-old of immense charm, wit, and intelligence - looks forward to the new year with hope and trepidation. Haunted by his secret past and shadowed by a dangerous stranger, he finds himself the object of an intense manhunt spearheaded by an ambitious Vatican emissary and an elderly former UN envoy named Hanna.

During the next forty-eight hours, a catastrophic event unites Will, Jillian, and Hanna - and puts them in the crosshairs of a centuries-old international conspiracy. Together, the three must unravel an ancient curse that stretches back two millennia and beyond, and face a primal evil that threatens their lives and thousands more.

Performance gets in the way of good book

I plan on reading this book sans audio. Most of the performances are fine, but there are some strange choices the actors make that detract from the prose - a bit over-acting, and a lot of weird dynamics. The main character puts an inane amount of pauses in his cadence which has the unfortunate effect of breaking up any action being described. There is also a little girl (obviously not voiced by a real little girl) who only talks in tiny whispers to the point of being inaudible at times.

The story itself is entertaining, if not a little beyond suspension of disbelief (even if you lived forever it doesn't mean you would meet so many important people in history, in fact wouldn't it mean you'd try to stay unnoticed?), but you should definitely read it yourself and skip the audiobook.

Amazing!

This is one of the best books I have enjoyed in a while. An amazing performance-the best I've ever heard, honestly- and a truly engaging, astonishing story.

Too Religious for My Taste

I believe the author missed an opportunity to keep the story strictly secular thereby avoiding the consequence of alienating the part of his audience that does not believe in an actual historical Jesus and Lucifer. Absolutely feasible with a bit of effort, I suspect.

I will consequently hesitate to purchase additional books he produces according to this genre.

Excellent story with wonderful narration.

I generally do not care for audiobooks with multiple narrators but in this case it was used as a wonderful device to enhance the written story. The caliber of voice acting is tremendous and immerses you deep into the experience.

A different path

A different take on an old concept.
One that I hope many will choose to listen. The fact that it covers a “God” theme throughout without shoving anyone’s religion down your throat is refreshing.

It is truly amazing what a little blood from a very good man can accomplish, or in this case, what a few good words ‘could’ accomplish if people would just practice the authors main premise in this well performed audio book.

Don’t think you’ll be sorry you spent the credit, so just do it......,.
