Waking up wet and injured in the middle of a muddy road, David Chambers finds himself lost in a world filled with nightmares.
His memory shattered, unable to recall how he got there, David finds that he has arrived on a shadowy version of Earth, precisely on the eve of a terrible battle. The dead, resurrected by the power of nature herself, are attacking the walled city of Blackmarch, intent on its total destruction. Captured by the town's fearful inhabitants, he's given no choice but to join in the heated war for survival.
After barely surviving the onslaught, he is drawn into a dangerous quest led by a mysterious and beautiful warrior. One who is intent on crossing the monster-infested miles of Dark Earth, in hopes of rescuing her missing husband.
As the cursed miles pass under his boots, memories begin to return, and David is now left with the terrible knowledge that it is he, who is responsible for his own black fate. With the very future of Earth itself teetering on a razor's edge, a reluctant hero discovers he isn't a hero at all, but responsible for a crime so terrible, he may not deserve to go home.
