Publisher's summary

Photography was in its infancy when Samuel Bourne learned how to make photographs in the mid 1840s. He was an intelligent young man who was well educated in Shropshire, England. At twenty-one Bourne obtained a position as a bank clerk in Nottingham and pursued photography as a hobby. In 1863, Bourne followed his dream and went to India. Meeting with photographer William Howard gave Bourne the chance of a partnership in Simla, India. Later when Howard retired, Bourne partnered with Charles Shepherd and the photographic studio of Bourne and Shepherd was begun. It lasted 150 years.Traveling into the Himalayas, Kashmir and all over India, Bourne produced more than 2000 landscape photographs of the finest quality ever seen in the 19th century. In this the illustrated edition, 30 photographs taken by Samuel Bourne have been selected from his years in India from 1863 - 1870. All are from the author's current or former collections.
