Publisher's summary

Sometimes the difference between a love story and a horror story is where the ending comes....

While Jude fought for power in the Court of Elfhame against the cruel Prince Cardan, her sister, Taryn, began to fall in love with the trickster Locke.

Half-apology and half-explanation, it turns out Taryn has some secrets of her own to reveal.

The Lost Sisters is a companion novella-length audiobook to the New York Times best-selling novel The Cruel Prince by master writer Holly Black.

be bold.

“Fairy tales are full of girls who wait, who endure, who suffer. Good girls. Obedient girls. Girls who crush nettles until their hands bleed. Girls who haul water for witches. Girls who wander through deserts or sleep in ashes or make homes for transformed brothers in the woods. Girls without hands, without eyes, without the power of speech, without any power at all. But then a prince rides up and sees the girl and finds her beautiful. Beautiful, not despite her suffering, but because of it.”

I don't know how Holly Black does it, but I am eternally grateful that she does.

The perfect novella into the mysterious and often frustrating mind of Jude's twin sister, Taryn. Half apology, half explanation, all because of miscommunication. I loved this window into a different side of the story, one that I had been curious and angry about. Taryn is a tragic character, just like Jude. (But, I'm still on Jude's side, through and through.)

Bravo, Holly

Nice little hold over

This was a decent hold over story but Taryn is the worst. She is selfish, hateful and her sense of entitlement to being understood and justifying her actions is baffling. She fits into their world way better than Jude. And even though she didn’t say so. I’m sure she knew what would happen with the fairy fruit and that’s really why she didn’t go that day.

In sync

It was definitely in sync with The Cruel Prince. It was actually quite nice to hear Taryn's side of the story and why. Your typical sibling differences and rivalries. The audio version was amazing!

Taeryn's Perspective

This was okay to listen to while waiting but I don't think it was necessary to read the next book. However it does have a few details more, it basically is Taeryn's perspective from book 1. if you care to find out more details I would recommend this, these details are anything from the girl's lives before being taken to meeting other fairies etc. not too important but nice to know.

Interesting enough, even if the value is arguable

If you can get it under 5 dollars it could be worth it I guess. It is an interesting enough concept to be able to see some behind the scenes perspective on the unravelling situations and be provided some character motivations that may be hard to decipher somewhat for the average reader. I wish that same perspective had stretched out to reflect the entirety of the first book, rather than the first 2/3 or so, as it would have made for an exceedingly gratifying read. Considering the book is is around the 10 % of the length of an average book on the site, being around half the price of a credit is asking a bit much, so do wait around for a sale on this one (especially since, as I mentioned, those 10 % of a book leave a significant bit to be desired).

I still hate her lol

So the Novella is from Teyrn’s perspective she’s basically explaining how everything unfolded with Lock from the 1st book. I was hoping her story would make me sympathetic to her but I still just think she’s selfish and weak lol

Taryn explains herself

So I thought this was supposed to be some sort of redemption story and it was sort of, Taryn explains why she did what she did to Jude at the end of Cruel Prince. However, I don't think that she redeemed herself, like to me her actions didn't really make sense. Essentially Locke plays her like he does other girls and the only reason he agreed to marry her was because she made him by threatening to tell everyone about his lies. I still don't think that Locke loves her, the way she loves him and that he is only going to be a bad husband to her. I don't understand why she wanted to marry him anyway, she seems to understand why he plays his games and yet she seems to think that as long as he marries her then he will be forced to stop them as should be his duty as her husband...but come on, this is Farie! Everyone just does whatever, everyone's a liar and cheater and has ulterior motives and just likes to see the world suffer. Taryn also insists that Jude will forgive her eventually and that is sorry for hurting her but not really sorry for what she did. I feel this story make Taryn look selfish and petty and naïve and that she is going to keep making bad decisions, all because she just wants everyone to like her and in the end will be alone. I liked this story and am looking forward to what she does in the next book. I was scratching my head at the end of the Cruel Prince because we didn't get enough information about Taryn to make what she did as impactful as I think Holly intended...it was kind of a hollow action in my opinion. But love the story, cant wait for more!

Not a Taryn Fan

I absolutely love the Folk of the Air series, some might even say I have an obsession… but I hate Taryn. I tried reading this before and lost interest a page or two into it, so I hoped if I listened to it I might find myself feeling something more than boredom. I was right. I also feel loathing and irritated.

I hate Taryn

But the novella was still good! Holly Black is a phenomenal writer, and even if you hate a character the writing itself is still so good. That last line was especially well written
