The Lost Letters spans 1941 to 2023, from the frost-locked streets of Budapest to the Bogotá savanna, from wartime Marseille to postwar Toronto, from the archives of the Budapest Jewish community to a family meeting in a house that no longer belongs to anyone. Eleven narrators take turns — Ana Marta, Esteban, young Tomás, adult Tomás, his children, his grandchildren, a friend, a historian, a grandson named Felipe who is ten years old and understands more than anyone gives him credit for. Each voice adds what the previous one could not see or would not say.
This is a novel about what families pass down and what they bury. About the shape of silence and the weight of what is never explained. About a boy who grows up to be an engineer and applies the logic of structures to everything except his own history — until his history finds him anyway.
