A People Magazine Best Book of Fall 2019

In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his estranged father’s funeral takes place. On the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family, too.

Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death.

The case calls Matthew back to the people and places of his past, as deadly secrets hidden at their hearts are revealed, and his new life is forced into a collision course with the world he thought he’d left behind.

Ok story

More shallow than Cleeves other series with lesser developed characters; a tad trite. Narrator’s style makes following difficult and his falling intonation is made more difficult due to a clipped style. Quality of recording poor in spots adding to difficulty of story accessibility and pacing.

Very Hard for Hearing Impaired

Narrator very difficult for hearing impaired. I have moderate impairment . I had to listen on my fire TV with my hearing aids in and TV volume at 99. Also slowed talk to 70 per cent. Most book don't requiremor than 60 TV volume and no change in speed. Almost returned the book.

Love Anne Cleeves work always: reader killed it

I am very sorry about this. Ann's work is superb, and this is a good story. But, the narrator was so challenging I stopped, then tried to slow it down (but that didn't help much either). Someone forgot to "edit" or "direct" the actor's performance with an ear for the audience. Words, or part of words dropped into a register so quiet I couldn't hear (especially frustrating when listening to dialogue) and staccato fast slow fast slow shifts that repeatedly left me in the dust and frustrated. To those readers who liked the performance I apologize and I am sure Mr. Aldridge was doing his professional best. But I am a long audible user (from the books on tape days) and this was the most frustrated I've been in almost forever.

Guaranteed to cure insomnia

Narration sounds like Morse code being sent through cotton wool...tried to stay with it ... failed miserably

There is no dimension to the story or the narrator.

Wish I had not purchased this . Hard to go from Jimmy Perez to this fellow.

Great narration

I love Ann Cleeves and this is a great new series. Unlike other reviewers I really enjoyed the narration-it was understated but nuanced and nicely modulated. I thought he handled regional accents well and I never wondered who was speaking. An excellent listen.

I wanted close captions!

Story was fairly interesting but I found the gay detective’s constant introspection and insecurity irritating. When I could understand it! The narrator’s accents were so heavy to my American ear and he read so rapidly I missed a lot of the words. I did like the sympathetic depiction of the lives of the Down’s syndrome characters and the portrayal of their individuality.

Audible, please choose another narrator

Characters and location offer great promise for this series. As others have said, this book was read in a monotone that makes it difficult to follow who is speaking. One sentence bleeds into another. If I had better vision I would have returned the book and purchased the kindle version.

Poor Narrator

This is the first time I have listened to an Ann Cleeves book and didn’t like. The narrator is so bad.

Yay, a new series! Loved it. Great narration.

It's always a bit sad to be introduced to new characters, just start getting to know them, then have to wait until you can be with them again. I'm an Ann Cleeves fan and was reluctant to move on from her prior series, but wasn't disappointed. I know another reader complained about the narration, I had NO difficulties, yet in the beginning kept thinking the thick bit must be coming up. This reader's alarm and my hesitation because of it was my only frustration.
