Story
Linda Greenlaw hadn’t been blue-water fishing for 10 years, since the great events chronicled in The Perfect Storm and The Hungry Ocean, when an old friend offered her the captaincy on his boat, Seahawk, for a season of swordfishing. She took the bait, of course, and thus opened a new chapter in a life that had already seen enough adventure for three lifetimes.

Story
In his number-one best seller The Perfect Storm, Sebastian Junger describes Linda Greenlaw as "one of the best sea captains, period, on the East Coast." Now Greenlaw tells her own riveting story of a 30 day swordfishing voyage aboard one of the best-outfitted boats on the East Coast, complete with danger, humor, and characters so colorful they seem to have been ripped from the pages of Moby Dick. The excitement starts immediately, even before Greenlaw and her five-man crew leave the dock.

Story
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head.

Yet, as best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick reveals in his spellbinding new book, the true story of the Pilgrims is much more than the well-known tale of piety and sacrifice; it is a 55-year epic that is at once tragic, heroic, exhilarating, and profound.

This novel by Carl Hiaasen, author of Tourist Season and Native Tongue, begins as most thrillers do, with a killing. But this is no everyday, hum-drum, garden variety killing. On May 15, 2010, after 210 days at sea and more than 22,000 nautical miles, 16-year-old Jessica Watson sailed her 33-foot boat triumphantly back to land. She had done it. She was the youngest person to sail solo, unassisted, and nonstop around the world. Jessica spent years preparing for this moment, years focused on achieving her dream. Yet only eight months before, she collided with a 63,000-ton freighter. It seemed to many that she’d failed before she’d even begun, but Jessica brushed herself off, held her head high, and kept going.

Publisher's Summary
But all doesn't go as planned. The lobsters resolutely refuse to crawl out from under their rocks and into the traps she and her stern man (AKA, her father) have painstakingly set. Her fellow Islanders, an extraordinary collection of characters, draw her into their bizarre Island intrigues. Guys prove even more elusive than lobsters. And as mainlanders increasingly fish waters that are supposed to be reserved for Islanders, she realizes the that the Island might be heading for a "gear war," a series of attacks that had in the past escalated from sabotage of equipment to extreme violence.
Then, just when she thinks things couldn't get much worse, something happens that forces her to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about life, luck, and lobsters.

Linda Greenlaw is an interesting person and a great writer with a dry sense of humor. I loved that she was narrating her own book. I got the feeling that this narration was sped up, for whatever reason. I wish that were not done.

Interesting, Enjoyable and Light
This is the second audio book by this author and narrator that I have listened to, and it was as enjoyable as the first. It's a fairly short "listen" and I always feel a little slighted for having to spend one credit on an audio book that is less than 8 hrs (in this case just less than 6); but on the flip side, having listened to many audio books that are much longer, it's really nice to find a story that is immediately engaging and well narrated. Granted, it is about her life (or a brief period thereof) as a lobster fisherman - and anecdotes of her life on a small island in Maine; if that doesn't sound like it will appeal to you, then this audio book probably won't. But I thought it was entertaining and a relaxing intermission (albeit brief) between stories that are often a fair bit little heavier.

I was poor 19 yr old soldier made $68/mo. I couldn't afford a lobster. I knew "downeasterners" were a different breed, as well as lobsterman, crabbers and clammers. French fisherman we had to shower them before drafting into Army. This fun book explained the mystery of lobstering and the fascinating people who bring them to our tables. I think Linda is a doll and she coulda trapped me but I never heard of Aus de Haut Island. A Widower 71 I was recently "trapped" again so never quit trying. Love is found in least likely places.

A new look at a different kind of life
Would you consider the audio edition of The Lobster Chronicles to be better than the print version?
I think they were both as good
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lobster Chronicles?
I lived in Rhode Island for the first 12 years of my life and my Grandmother grew up in Easport ME so it was very touching to me. The complexity of the very small town and the relationships of the towns people were wonderful to read about and it made me want to go to the island to visit
What does the narrator bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Great
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Story
Green Haven, Maine, is as far from the heat and violence of her past as Jane Bunker could hope for. When she trades in her career as a big-city homicide detective for a new job as a marine insurance investigator, Jane thinks that a fresh start in this sleepy seaside town will finally allow her the peace and quiet that she's been craving. But when the town drunk washes up on shore - with the back of his head smashed in - Jane realizes that Green Haven is not the quaint sanctuary she'd thought it was.

Story
The Time Bandit is the fishing vessel that Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand use to hook the "deadliest catch", Alaskan king crabs and opilio crabs, in the Bering Sea, a dangerous body of water that can steal years from a fisherman's life. In pursuit of their daily catch, the brothers brave ice floes and heaving 60-foot waves, gusting winds of 80 miles per hour, unwieldy and unpredictable half-ton steel crab traps, and an injury rate of almost 100-percent.
There are fewer than 400 fishermen of this kind in the U.S., and early death is a common fate. But the Hillstrand brothers are drawn to the drama and adventure of life on the high seas - this is their world.

Story
At middle age, Herb and Nancy Payson decided they needed a change. Why not give up life on shore, quit their jobs in the smoky nightclubs of Los Angeles, and take up the cruising life? In Sea Foam, their 36-foot ketch, the Paysons and their large brood of teenage children cruised the Pacific for six and a half years. They experienced a certain amount of stark terror, but their delights far outbalanced the drawbacks. This special 35th anniversary edition is enhanced with a foreword by Lin Pardey, plus Herb's reflections on how cruising affected his children and his relationship with his determined, lifelong partner/wife Nancy.
