Publisher's summary

Stanley Elkin’s The Living End is a marvelously funny novel about life and death, heaven and hell. In it, the National Book Award-winning author sets into motion a divine comedy that will have you chuckling at his wry visions of celestial affairs. Ellerbee, the unassuming owner of a small liquor store, is fatally shot in a holdup. First, the Angel of Death ushers him into a wondrous heaven, but St. Peter has other, more infernal plans for this hero. After his transfer, Ellerbee discovers that hell is a busy place. Even God pays an occasional visit there. But the pep talks God delivers to its tormented residents aren’t anything like what he gave to Job. Veteran narrator George Guidall provides the perfect voices for the baffled Ellerbee, dutiful angels, and tattered souls who gather before God. He’ll make you feel right at home in this spirited world of sight gags, one liners, and cosmic pranks.

Listen!

If you could sum up The Living End in three words, what would they be?

poetic, original, profound

What other book might you compare The Living End to and why?

The Book of Job. The Conventional Wisdom runs over some of the same track, asking how one could reconcile the existence of a Good God with the manifest unfairness of life; but it also demonstrates that the religious values we profess are absurdly at odds with our basic belief in how to lead a good, principled, moral life. The later chapters of The Living End abandon this project for the deeper pleasure of creating stories that ought to be impossible to tell & then telling them beautifully.

Which character ??? as performed by George Guidall ??? was your favorite?

Ellerbee

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Ellerbee's prayer

Any additional comments?

Elkin remains an important, under-appreciated 20th century American novelist with a large oeuvre that should be made available on Audible.
