Publisher's summary

There’s blossom in the trees and daffodils as far as the eye can see. Maddie is looking forward to a fresh start in the countryside, but there’s just one little problem....

Following a scandal at her high-flying PR agency, 26-year-old Maddie flees London to help promote what she thinks is going to be a luxurious holiday retreat in the countryside. Everything is riding on her making a success of this new job....

Yet when she arrives, Maddie is horrified to find a run-down old farm in a terrible state. The brooding and secretive owner, Seth, spent all his money on leasing the land when he fell in love with the beautiful, disheveled farm cottages and the very romantic story behind them.

When Maddie discovers an old painting by the original owner’s wife, she unlocks the secret of the farm’s history and quickly realizes she must start getting her hands dirty if this very special place is going to have any chance of survival. As she and Seth begin working together, the stunning view from the top of the hill is not the only thing that’s leaving her breathless....

After weeks of hard work the dream looks like it might become a reality, until a secret from Maddie’s past threatens to snatch it all away again.

Can Maddie find a way to save the business and herself? Will she finally find a place to keep her heart within the crumbling walls of the little cottage on the hill? Perfect for fans of Jenny Colgan, Lucy Diamond, and Debbie Johnson who are looking to escape to the countryside and fall in love watching the seasons change.

A delightful, cheerful story

The Little Cottage on the Hill is the second book that I have read by Emma Davies, and I can say with absolute confidence that I am now a huge fan.

Set in the breathtaking Shropshire countryside, The Little Cottage on the Hill is very much a novel about breaking down facades and discovering your true self.

In terms of the characters, I believe that Emma Davies had written an incredibly dynamic cast. For instance, I initially took a strong disliking to Seth and Maddie; I felt that they were both incredibly stubborn and unwilling to communicate properly. However, throughout the novel, I grew to love them as they both took shape and discovered themselves. Just goes to show you that first impressions aren't always correct.

As for the setting, is there really anything better than an idyllic English countryside for one to escape to from the hustle and bustle of city life? Enough said.

Finally, as with any audiobook, what made The Little Cottage on the Hill even more indelible was the narration. Alison Campbell did an outstanding job bringing this book and its characters to life, and I have no complaints whatsoever.

Overall, The Cottage on the Hill was a very lovely and cheerful read that felt much like a nice, cosy hug. I can't wait to check out the sequel, Summer at the Cottage on the Hill.

This was a great story well told by an outstanding narrator. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did set the speed of the narration at 1.3.

Couldn't finish it, to slow

I can finish just about any book. I even like the low key, slow paced books that make you feel nice. But I just could not get through this book. I wanted to, which is why I got about 3/4 the way through...but just couldn't bare it the narrator was almost hypnotically laid back; making this quiet low key book an absolute coma.
I wanted to like it....just couldn't.
