Publisher's Summary

In 2005, Joel Greenblatt published a book that is already considered one of the classics of finance literature. In The Little Book that Beats the Market—a New York Times best seller with 300,000 copies in print—Greenblatt explained how investors can outperform the popular market averages by simply and systematically applying a formula that seeks out good businesses when they are available at bargain prices. Now, with a new Introduction and Afterword for 2010, The Little Book that Still Beats the Market updates and expands upon the research findings from the original book. Included are data and analysis covering the recent financial crisis and model performance through the end of 2009.

In a straightforward and accessible style, the book explores the basic principles of successful stock market investing and then reveals the author’s time-tested formula that makes buying above-average companies at below-average prices automatic. Though the formula has been extensively tested and is a breakthrough in the academic and professional world, Greenblatt explains it using sixth-grade math, plain language, and humor. He shows how to use his method to beat both the market and professional managers by a wide margin.

You’ll also learn why success eludes almost all individual and professional investors, and why the formula will continue to work even after everyone “knows” it. While the formula may be simple, understanding why the formula works is the true key to success for investors. Greenblatt will take listeners on a step-by-step journey so that they can learn the principles of value investing in a way that will provide them with a long term strategy that they can understand and stick with through both good and bad periods for the stock market.

Critic Reviews

"Mr. Greenblatt…says his goal was to provide advice that, while sophisticated, could be understood and followed by his five children, ages 6 to 15. They are in luck. His ‘Little Book’ is one of the best, clearest guides to value investing out there.” ( The Wall Street Journal)

Loads of Common Sense

This is a really good book that presents a cogent theory of value investing. The author also provides examples (updated by a website) on how to put the theory into practice.

Poor and useless information

Magic Formula is a waste of money. Try other books this one is boring and provides little value for time invested to read it.

Simple rules for finding good investments

What made the experience of listening to The Little Book That Still Beats the Market the most enjoyable?

I like the simplicity and clarity in wading thru so much noise in investing to find what you need to select some good investments (using stock screeners, it makes it even easier). Warning: Does require patience, and I have not used this system to know how well it works... but Joel Greenblatt has a good reputation as a very good investor.

Good book

Greenblatt is a superb value investor. The magic formula is not the pinnacle of good value investing but it is a better option than an index fund or most active funds for most investors. There are also good lessons in the book for everyone.

One of the best stock investment books

Loved the book from both content and narration points of view.

The book provides a basic understanding of stock investment in an easy to understand manner before introduction and explanation of the 'magic formula', with the author providing information on the benefits and flaws of the formula (based on extensive research over a number of years) and how to best to get market-beating return using the formula.

An OK introduction to value investing.

This book is a light-heated summery of Benjamin Graham's methods for long-term investments in corporate equities. It's clearly designed for absolute beginners, and has plenty of Greenblatt's sense of humor.

It was a bit too basic and short on details for my taste. But if you're totally new to the field, it'll probably do the job in a more fun way than many beginners stocks books out there.

Narrator is fine

I liked the book

What did you like most about The Little Book That Still Beats the Market?

This book has a PDF - my favorite part.
Also the author explains one type of investing strategy very easily, so that even children would understand. I liked the book. It is very fun to listen to, not boring as many others.

Magic Formula

This is not a good book. There is a lot of unwanted text and every now the author keeps speaking about magic formula, magic formula. A one page formula is made into an entire book.

Another dot in a string of dots joined up to make investing work for the newbie

Narrated extremely well. Please to listen to.

Will the technique work? Well, I guess I can’t say as a I haven’t done it, but the book has some really fantastic references in it and I’m sure people would do well to keep reading every book in the library on this topic so as to round off the skills that this book and many others like it are written to improve and teach

I would recommend it completely. At 5 hours, it is well worth the commitment

Short and to the point

A simple idea and not too much pooha around it. Simple enough for everyone to understand, yet interesting enough for economics minded people.

Fun book

Was very simple, easy to understand with a fundamental value investing approach. A little bit of tried humour was pretty cool. This investing approach has been highly successful for myself over the past 7 years.

Not for outside the USA...?

It seemed interesting and made sense but at the end states it is not really applicable outside of America... tried looking for stocks here in Australia and CommSec didn't have the stocks listed on his website.

FULL OF FLUFF

There are some books you just can't put down. This isn't one of them, in fact part way in, I couldn't pick it back up again!!
when the author started talking about "The magic formula that can predict the future" that was enough..
Full of fluff, very patronising and outdated despite the author claiming the 2010 version being an update, still talks about markets and historicals pre 2004
Do yourself a favour and dont..

A ridiculously patronising book

When the author said he was writing a book so simple a child could understand it, he wasn’t joking. This book is incredibly patronising and leaves you with the distinct impression that the author thinks the reader is a moron. Add to that a voice actor who over emphasises every sentence and belabours the already stupid jokes, and you get a book that is pretty much impossible to listen to. Content wise, it’s actually too basic unless you’ve literally never heard of stocks or the stock market before. Like ever. There are far better books on this subject out there.

My Ears are echoing Magic Formula ..magic formula

If Author could have just used Word "Formula" instead of saying Magic Formula each time, It could have saved half of the pages. All you keep hearing is Magic formula magic formula. and Magic Formula is given in just Last hour of book and takes 15 mins to explain , that's it.
