Publisher's Summary

The engrossing, heartwarming story of what happens when people at the end of their tether contact the Samaritans...

In this deeply felt, absorbingly told novel, Monica Dickens not only vividly portrays three would-be suicides-but also the Samaritans themselves- Paul the ex-schoolmaster whose career has been ruined by an alcoholic wife, Victoria, half-engaged to a peer's conventional son, young Sarah who shimmers with youth and human compassion...

This is a story in Monica Dickens' inimitable style- salted with humour, and inspired with love

Good oldfashioned story

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The story itself is interesting enough....a series of interlocking vignettes set around The Samaritans but the reading is very dull. There are a lot of characters in this story and the reader doesn't differentiate in tone between them. She also never pauses between one character's tale and the next which left me very confused as to whose story I was listening to.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Listeners?

The story of Tim was probably the most interesting though they all are told with great humanity.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Victoria Atkin?

It wouldn't matter in the slightest whether the narrator was male or female so someone like Daniel Weyman or Stephan Thorne would have been perfect.

Did The Listeners inspire you to do anything?

The make sure I didn't buy other books read by Victoria Atkin!

Spoiled by clumsy narration

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book but not this audio version of it. It is a book I have read twice before over the years and hoped to enjoy listening to but was disappointed.

What other book might you compare The Listeners to, and why?

Most other Monica Dickens, some Barbara Pym, some Barbara Vine.

What didn’t you like about Victoria Atkin’s performance?

Victoria Atkin has a pleasant, husky voice but the narration was peppered with mispronunciations, some confusing, some hilarious. The tempo of the writing was generally disregarded, broken up into jerky segments that often changed the meaning of sentences or scenes. All the voices sounded the same, which was unhelpful. Even the title was announced incorrectly both before and after. A careless and amateurish rendition which fell far below Audible's usual high standard of narration.Perhaps the poor woman was given a duff script and I am being harsh but it was rather a shambles.
