Publisher's Summary

From the best-selling author of The Girl Who Came Home and The Girl from the Savoy comes a novel inspired by the extraordinary story of a remarkable young woman.

1838: when a terrible storm blows up off the Northumberland coast, Grace Darling, the lighthouse keeper’s daughter, knows there is little chance of survival for the passengers on the small ship battling the waves. But her actions set in motion an incredible feat of bravery that echoes down the century.

1938: when 19-year-old Matilda Emmerson sails from across the Atlantic to New England, she faces an uncertain future. Sent away in disgrace, she must stay with her reclusive relative, Harriet Flaherty, a lighthouse keeper on Rhode Island. Once there, Matilda discovers a discarded portrait that opens a window onto a secret that will change her life forever.

Interesting, unusual story

An interesting "faction" story about someone most of us will have heard of. Easy listening. I really enjoyed it & would recommend it to others.

Lovely

I really enjoyed this book. Obviously all the different y accents left a bit to be desired, but they were good enough.

Not satisfying

There was not a single successful romantic relationship in this book. Nor were women allowed to be truly strong. They could perform outlandish rescues but then perish in the oceans themselves or oops, by standing in the rain! The thread of history through the locket and book was tiresome. Big deal!

Beautiful story

I really enjoy this story, I loved the character of Grace Darling, however I was at time’s overwhelmed with the amount of sadness and tragedy. Lots of twists and turn it was nicely unpredictable.
