This is the remarkable and tragic story of Oscar Wilde, legendary wit and conversationalist, author of perhaps the most perfect comedy in the English language, yet seemingly doomed by his own flawed temperament to suffer at the hands of a censorious and hypocritical society...

Reseñas editoriales

"Esoteric prurience... Stupid and vulgar... Delights in dirtiness... Garish vulgarity..." These are snippets of reviews of Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890). As poor Oscar would find out, similar words would be spoken about his life, particularly regarding his sexual inclinations. Noted British actor Simon Russell Beale gives profound voice to this sad biography of one of the true geniuses in English letters.

Originally published in 1946, The Life of Oscar Wilde is regarded as critical in rehabilitating Wilde’s reputation. This recording graciously provides modernist music in between chapter breaks: Note the pleasantness of the strings accompanying Wilde’s cozy childhood, and the minor key descent as Wilde ages. The production of this fine audiobook does Wilde - and the listener - a great service.

I have gone full-circle to reading about Oscar Wilde, and this biography was as fun as a traveling focused memoir. I like that I could see that the author did add his own embellishments to Mr.Wilde’s life, and made it easier for first-time crows to digest. It was a bit fantastical, even through translated, second-hand accounts of Mr.Wilde’s conversations. I even said aloud that I’ve been starving for something to hit my brain in it’s funny bone.

If what the interviewee’s said about Mr.Wilde are accurate, then I know he would have charmed me. My father was born in 1958, not too long after this publication, and it throws me through such an existential loop when the past wasn’t even that long ago. Even if decades move in rapid change with culture, law, and societal expectations’ people like Mr.Wilde always stand out. Also, to the people who laughed at him when he was released from incarceration, I wanted to strongly, in modern day fashion, take my flamethrower to your luxury coats.

One note of edit, for the narration audio, I am not sure when this was recorded, but it contained a lot of radio static.
