Publisher's summary

"Narrator Tinashe Warikandwa gives dimension to the featured character, Ropa, as she makes her way in a harsh environment. Warikandwa captures the spirit of a young teen who quit school to become a ghost stalker to support her gran, sister, and self." (AudioFile)

Sixth Sense meets Stranger Things in T. L. Huchu's The Library of the Dead, a sharp contemporary fantasy following a precocious and cynical teen as she explores the shadowy magical underside of modern Edinburgh.

When ghosts talk
She will listen

Ropa dropped out of school to become a ghostalker - and they sure do love to talk. Now she speaks to Edinburgh’s dead, carrying messages to those they left behind. A girl’s gotta earn a living, and it seems harmless enough. Until, that is, the dead whisper that someone’s bewitching children - leaving them husks, empty of joy and strength. It’s on Ropa’s patch, so she feels honor-bound to investigate. But what she learns will rock her world.

Ropa will dice with death as she calls on Zimbabwean magic and Scottish pragmatism to hunt down clues. And although underground Edinburgh hides a wealth of dark secrets, she also discovers an occult library, a magical mentor, and some unexpected allies.

Yet as shadows lengthen, will the hunter become the hunted?

Entertaining

Story and writing is a little overbearing at times, but it is firmly in the young adult category so to be expected. Good narration.

Good Book

Enjoyed it. Book held my attention. It moved at a good pace. I am told it is much easier to listen to it than to read it.

Engrossing story

In this dystopian future, a young girl with green dreadlocks and black lipstick is just doing her best. Magical realism mixes well with the collapse of society in this captivating listen! I can’t wait to hear more from this author!!

Not crazy about the narrator

The story was interesting enough, I finished it. I think the narrators lack of emotion during the read kind of ruined the exciting parts.

interesting read

This was a fun read. It's nothing like I've read before and it has a different level of childlike view point to it. I wasn't annoyed at the main character for selfish decisions and immature attitudes like you normally ready in female lead characters who are older. She was really mature for her age about a lot of things that she shouldn't have had to endure but she put her family's needs first and made understandable choices for her age. Good book.

unsure of feelings on this one

I really struggled with the beginning, as the main character is so young. I liked the voice of the narrator, but I wasn't sure the performance had life behind the reading. By the time the story picked up more interest, I had already wondered if I should stop listening. I'm glad I did finish, I will be interested in reading book 2, but I think I'll be more cautious regarding listening or reading it.

Could not stop listening!

I bought this book on a whim. Browsing the tables at Barnes & Noble. The cover and the title looked interesting. I had it for quite some time before I cracked it open. Once I started reading I couldn’t stop. The audio was even better. The accents…. the pronunciations! Enjoyed it so much! Just finished number 2 in the series and waiting on 3 to be released!

well written and well narrated

The author has done a fantastic job weaving a parallel universe storyline with accessible relatable world building. The pace and story are extremely enjoyable and it does very well as an audiobook with a couple nods to the genre interwoven into the narrative. Fast paced at times so pay attention but all in all very well done!
