Publisher's Summary

"Narrator Tinashe Warikandwa gives dimension to the featured character, Ropa, as she makes her way in a harsh environment. Warikandwa captures the spirit of a young teen who quit school to become a ghost stalker to support her gran, sister, and self." (AudioFile)

Sixth Sense meets Stranger Things in T. L. Huchu's The Library of the Dead, a sharp contemporary fantasy following a precocious and cynical teen as she explores the shadowy magical underside of modern Edinburgh.

When ghosts talk
She will listen

Ropa dropped out of school to become a ghostalker - and they sure do love to talk. Now she speaks to Edinburgh’s dead, carrying messages to those they left behind. A girl’s gotta earn a living, and it seems harmless enough. Until, that is, the dead whisper that someone’s bewitching children - leaving them husks, empty of joy and strength. It’s on Ropa’s patch, so she feels honor-bound to investigate. But what she learns will rock her world.

Ropa will dice with death as she calls on Zimbabwean magic and Scottish pragmatism to hunt down clues. And although underground Edinburgh hides a wealth of dark secrets, she also discovers an occult library, a magical mentor, and some unexpected allies.

Yet as shadows lengthen, will the hunter become the hunted?

It’s painful

The story has potential but the language is unbearably simple and the work “like” is used so often it gives me a headache. The voice actor has one tone and one voice for all of the characters. Not worth it

Young Adult story and narration

I am not far into the story - they've just reached the Library (which is in the title so no spoiler here) I hope to return the book simply because I have a distaste for YA stories. I had pre-purchased this book based on another author's recommendation in a blog. Urban Fantasy is fun to read. (Although this was categorized in Horror - just because it has ghosts in it, it isn't horror) The youthful voice of the narrator, the 14 year old main character, it's just not my thing. Instead of gritting my teeth and powering through this book, I'm going to ask for a refund. So far it has had brilliant moments. So, probably will be enjoyed by many others.

Great narrator, terrible material

This book is just a mess. Where is the library. This girl is just wandering around the city being sassy

I have no idea if this book is good or not because I couldn’t listen to it all.

The narrator performance is unpracticed and untrained, that made it difficult for me to listen to the story. I don’t recommend this book in this format for that reason.

Not great

I finished it but that was hard for me to get through. reviews require at least 15 words. I have nothing more to add.

Irritating

I rarely fail to finish a book but this was so...irritating. The main character is super annoying. Maybe sassy 13 year olds will find her interesting. She has that Disney Channel "edgie teen" vibe that is just over the top and hard to connect with if you're not a very young child. There were parts of the story that 50% of the way in, were interesting, but not enough to overcome an unlikable character and flat narration.

Fun story - brilliant performance!

This story is fun and exciting - and family friendly (no swearing or sex). If the story was very good - the performance was AMAZING! What a perfectly cast reading - absolutely cannot wait for the next!

Good Book

Enjoyed it. Book held my attention. It moved at a good pace. I am told it is much easier to listen to it than to read it.

Narrator :(

I think the story would have been better with a different narrator. I rarely don’t finish a book and I sadly could not finish this one :(
Wondering if physically reading the book would bring the story to life differently for me bc the story has potential!
