Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

It’s hard meeting your ex after so much time apart. You remember the tears and accusations, the desperate look on his face as he punched the wall, but you try not to show it. You smile politely, even while your heart beats faster. You watch as he looks down into the stroller, at the beautiful blond-haired, blue-eyed baby kicking his little legs in the sunshine, whose innocent smile lights up your world. You see his face change. You know what he’s thinking. The next day he calls. His voice is shaking. He wants the truth. Is it his child?

Publisher's Summary
Samantha stumbled out of the party and onto a busy street only 10 minutes away from her home. But she never made it home...
Seven years after Samantha’s disappearance, on what would have been her 33rd birthday, her best friend Diane is shocked to find a letter addressed to Samantha on her doorstep.
Opening the envelope, Diane pulls out a birthday card and a finger nail painted in dusky pink nail polish. The same shade Samantha always wore. The same shade she was wearing the night she went missing.
When police analyse the nail, they don’t get the result they expected. Instead of linking them to Samantha, the nail belongs to another woman, Jade Ashmore. And Jade was murdered the night before the envelope was delivered...
The completely addictive new crime thriller from best-selling author Carla Kovach - if you love Lisa Gardner, Robert Bryndza, or Clare Mackintosh, you’ll love The Liar’s House. Gripping from the start - you won’t be able to stop listening.

Tired Plot, Stalled Character Development
I enjoyed the Gina series until about book 4, when I realized how repetitive the books had become. It’s okay that the books use a standard scenario: female cop in charge of a murder case; she has a troubled past and difficult personal relationships exacerbated by her dedication to the job. To avoid the formula getting stale the characters have to develop. They have to deal with their with their problems or be swallowed by them. They need to learn from their mistakes, and to mature. In this series the top cop ignores signs of danger, keep secrets, and looses her cool. She slams doors, kicks and throws things. She doesn’t accept help, unwisely keeps secrets, and turns down love. I’m tired of the characters making the same stupid mistakes. Come on! You know there’s a murderer on the loose. Look out the peephole before you open the door. Come on! You’re lonely, he loves each other, figure out a way to make it work.

Always a treat
The Gina Hart series is one of my favorites. I always just gobble them up, and this is no exception. The only issue I have with this is one I have with all books I read that are part of a series: the follow ups. As someone that's been reading since book one, I know all the characters and their histories. However, this series doesn't really require you read each one in order so often times within the story the author will rehash old storylines so keep the reader up to date. I hate it only because it's not meant for me and I just wanna get to the juicy bits. Other than that, another fantastic story.

Ok but....
The stories all have good premise.. the characters started out ok but have never developed over the course of books I have read so far... the DI seems to have regressed and barely holding it together and so sick of hearing of her past with her dead husband we’ve heard these thing over and over again. Her ex relationship with her boss over and over .. her issues with her daughter over and over... when you listen to a series and I listen to many 30 and counting to be exact you expect to see your characters to grow develop unfortunately occasionally change or be killed off but this series is stagnant you can’t connect and you b come frustrated and annoyed instead of sympathy or empathy or even wanting to continue the series... it’s not the first series I’ve had to give up on won’t be the last but I hope the author starts to learn from reviews because her story have promise if you could just get past characters that aren’t going anywhere

I’ve finally finished the Liars House after struggling to find time to listen but wanting it never to end at the same time.
Another stunning story written by Carla Kovach and read by the amazing Tamsin Kennard who for me is Gina Harte. The characters tugged at the heart strings when sometimes they shouldn’t have. I’ve listened to all of the series and can’t wait until the next story. Thank you Carla Kovach!

Gina Harte is an unbearable sad sack
I purchased this on a whim as I had already listened to the other Gina Harte books. But this one is unbearable.
Gina Harte needs to get over what happened like 20 years ago and move the hell on... she’s a privileged white woman on a successful career path (god knows how because she really is a sub-par copper) and yet she still only ever sooks, everything is *so* hard and dreary.
I can’t do it. I can’t force myself to finish the book. There’s still six hours left and I’m deleting it out of my library to make room for another woman detective who is smart, resilient, upbeat, confident and can roll with the punches.

This series isn’t worth listening to anymore
I really enjoyed the first 2 books of this series.
The story was good. Characters were good. I liked the main character Gina very much.
By book 3 the author decided to change Gina from a strong, successful leader into an emotional wreck who can hardly function day to day let alone lead a team to solve a mystery.
Book 4 is 90% her having a panic attacks, having flash backs to her past or pining for her ex boyfriend that she dumped. The addition of yet another anxiety ridden weak female character as part of the story just added insult to injury.
Remove the repetitive and boring parts focused solely on the above and the book would be about 2/3 shorter. It’s a shame so little of the story was actually about the crime they were solving.
I won’t bother with this series anymore. It’s not a detective story anymore.

A little sobby
I love the general storyline but after 3 books of hearing Gina’s sob backstory and listening to her constantly bring it up, it’s getting old! She needs to move on and be herself.
The twist at the end was clever!

Another incompetent female detective
She’s more interested in her own dysfunctional life and her own ‘needs’ than anything else. An unfortunate character who does nothing for the promotion of female capability in a traditionally male role.

Another good one from the series!
There was more in this book than previous ones, about Gina's thoughts and feelings re her past and current personal situations; however unlike some other reviewers, I found that to just be part of the development of the character and not a bad thing! I'm sure as the series evolves her character will continue to evolve and I'd rather that, than just the basic crime story...which I really enjoyed😊

Story
When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him. Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home. Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member. And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police. Three women with separate connections to the victim. Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment. Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them.
