Publisher's summary

Kristen Ciccarelli's debut fantasy explores an intricately woven world of deception, inner darkness, and dragons that fantasy fans won't be able to resist.

In the beginning there was the Namsara: the child of sky and spirit who carried love and laughter wherever he went. But where there is light, there must be darkness - and so there was also the Iskari. The child of blood and moonlight. The destroyer. The death bringer.

These are the legends that Asha, daughter of the king of Firgaard, has grown up learning in hushed whispers, drawn to the forbidden figures of the past. But it isn't until she becomes the fiercest, most feared dragon slayer in the land that she takes on the role of the next Iskari - a lonely destiny that leaves her feeling more like a weapon than a girl.

Asha conquers each dragon and brings its head to the king, but no kill can free her from the shackles that await at home: her betrothal to the cruel commandant, a man who holds the truth about her nature in his palm.

When she's offered the chance to gain her freedom in exchange for the life of the most powerful dragon in Firgaard, she finds that there may be more truth to the ancient stories than she ever could have expected. With the help of a secret friend - a slave boy from her betrothed's household - Asha must shed the layers of her Iskari bondage and open her heart to love, light, and a truth that has been kept from her.

I was into it as soon as it started. I didn't have to wait for it to get interesting at all. I love the idea of the book, loved the writing, loved the twists.

Worth buying!!!

If I had known how amazing this book was, I wouldn't have even waited for my credit to come in. I would have straight paid cash for it. It's amazing -- I don't even want to say why it's amazing, because you should experience it for yourself. The narration too might be my favorite ever. This book is at the intersection between The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley, The Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner, and Tamora Pierce. If any or all of those are up your alley, you'll probably be happy here, too. Just amazing. If I find it in print I'm buying immediately just to know I have a physical copy on hand in case the world ends and I can't listen to my Audible copy.

BEAUTIFUL story, Beautiful performance

I LOVED this book!!! The author weaves a beautiful story and I couldn’t put it down. I didn’t think a book with dragons would be something I would be very interested in but I loved the characters, the plot, everything. And Pearl Mackie does a wonderful job narrating and adds such a beautiful touch to this story!

Great!

loved this! I'm not great with my words but I loved hers. I loved that it was clean with out foul language or inappropriate love scenes. I fell in love with the characters.

Epicness!

I had my doubts. I did. But Kristen Ciccarelli and Pearl Mackie drew me in one chapter at a time and before I knew it, I was too far gone and craving more!

I finished it in roughly three days; without interruptions (and pesky things like work and sleep) , I probably would have finished it in two honestly.

It's all beautiful; the mystery, the danger, the romance, the betrayal... I'm in love and I do believe this is one story I will definitely listen to again! Already pre-ordered the next one and looking forward to more!

Fantastic story and wonderful narration!

Really enjoyed this book. The story sucks you right in and the author unfolds the story, world and social situation as you go little by little. Sometimes it will even keep you up past your bed time listening for what will happen next.
