Publisher's Summary

The teenage girl was the first victim. Her throat cut to the bone, she didn’t stand a chance. Her mother, at least, had time to fight back. Briefly. Called to the crime scene in leafy Wimbledon, Maeve Kerrigan’s first thought is that this is a domestic dispute gone badly. But the husband is found lying bleeding and unconscious in an upstairs room. As a criminal barrister he insists he’s the third victim rather than their prime suspect, even if he’s a man who makes enemies easily. The only other surviving family member is 15-year-old Lydia. She was the one to find her mother and twin sister’s bodies - and the only witness Maeve has. But she isn’t talking....

Excellent police procedural

Where does The Last Girl rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of my favourite crime novels of the year

Who was your favorite character and why?

Maeve

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely! I have been longing for a well written, well narrated, gripping crime thriller and this definitely fits the bill. I was gripped by the storyline and really didn't know where it was heading. The characterisation is convincing and it is superbly narrated by Caroline Lennon.

Any additional comments?

I would suggest starting with the first in the Maeve Kerrigan series but think this works equally well as a stand alone novel.

As excellent as the others in the series

What other book might you compare The Last Girl to, and why?

The others in Jane Casey's series of novels featuring DC Maeve Kerrigan. All of which are fabulous.

What about Caroline Lennon’s performance did you like?

She's an excellent narrator. Great inflection and very good at differentiating voices of different characters.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not that kind of book.

Any additional comments?

If you like beautifully written contempory crime, with really well drawn characters, you should love this, but I recommend reading/listening to the series in order.

BRILLIANT!

My favourite so far in the series, so well crafted, engaging and engrossing. Why is this not a movie or TV series. Crying out to be seen on screen <3

Intricate plot

Another excellent story in the series. This series is very good on motive and procedure. I thought I’d worked out, and although I guessed who the killer was, before the reveal towards the end, I spent the first two thirds of the story barking up the wrong motive tree. I recommend this series if you like good plots, detailed characterisation, and excellent narration. I do sometimes find the heroine highly irritating sometimes though.

Interesting

Interesting, but seemed to be rushed at the end...starting to be usual. Will read another.

No

I did not like this book at all. There was a great deal of extraneous detail that I found very tedious indeed.
My interest peaked only when we got back "on story", dead mother and daughter and knocked out dad.
I got this book to listen to while I was on a long distance drive so I wanted a book that would hold my attention and was easy to listen to. This wasn't it.
I only gave the performance three stars. It may actually have been better than that and it was the book that spoilt it for me.
No more Jane Casey for me.
