Publisher's summary

When identical twins inherit a Victorian mansion from a stranger, the bequest changes everything they knew about their past.

The house at Herron Pond is no stranger to tragedy. Accidental death. A devastating fire. Suicide.

Are the reports of supernatural activity the persistent gossip of visitors and staff? Or are the chilling tales true?

Jessica Mack is not afraid of ghosts. She has been communicating with the spirit world since last year, when she was forced to surrender to her psychic gifts. Since then, she has used those gifts to help the FBI, and to answer voices from the Other Side asking for favors. Most of the requests are poignant—“tell my wife I’m sorry for the way I behaved.” “Let my son know I love him.”

But a dark presence lurks at the Victorian mansion, demanding more from her. Much more.

  • Who was Vadim Evanov, and why did he leave his entire estate to the twin sisters?
  • Why was she warned not to enter the last door on the second-floor landing?
  • Why does Beethoven’s wistful composition "Für Elise" keep haunting her?

Jessica's visit to the Big Sur estate is a search for answers. She must uncover the truth before another catastrophe strikes Herron Pond—one that could end her life.

An edge-of-your-seat mystery!

This story is the perfect blend of suspense, romance, surprises, twists and turns, and completely eerie situations that had me on the edge of my seat until the very end. Even though it is the third book in this series, it can absolutely be enjoyed without having read the previous books because the author is adept at filling in pertinent details from the characters’ past without compromising the brisk pace of the story. Having said that, I think you will find this paranormal tale so well-written and so captivating that if you haven’t read the others, you will be compelled to do so. When twin sisters Jessica and Jenna are surprised by the unexpected inheritance of a grand mansion, they have no idea why a stranger would be so magnanimous or how this windfall will change their lives forever. With Jenna having a family emergency calling her away suddenly, Jessica is left alone in the house for a couple of days. She learns that the house has many surprises aside from the astounding view, the private beach, and the unique blend of Victorian and modern architecture. As she digs into the history of the house and its previous occupants, things take one ominous turn after another. I loved how well the characters were developed, the vivid descriptions of the mansion and surrounding grounds, the perfect blend of eerie suspense and supernatural intrigue without any over-the-top gruesome scenes, and the basic plot that kept me guessing throughout until I got to the final oh-so-satisfying conclusion. What a ride! I chose to read along as I listened to the audiobook and I must comment on the outstanding performance of the narrator, Anna Crowe. Her voice transported me into each scene as if I were a bystander experiencing the disconcerting events unfold right there with the characters. She brought each character to life and kept them distinct from one another from start to finish. In my opinion, she provided the perfect voice for this exceptional story.

I was provided with a free copy of this audiobook, for which I thank the author, but I am sharing my honest and unbiased review on a completely voluntary basis.

From the dark to the hot!

The Last Door keeps your attention! Very well written. I am afraid to say too much for fear of giving the plot away!

An Eerie Mystery

This was my first experience with Sheila Lowe's work, and I enjoyed it. The story was ominous without being gruesome. It kept me on the edge-of-my seat wondering what would happen next. The characters were convoluted. I'll be looking for more stories from this author. Anna Crowe's narration was fine and reflected the story's ambiance. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

woo woo vibes

identical twins inherit an immense estate from an unknown decedent. The big question is, why them? Following a traumatic car accident, the older - older by 10 minutes, Jessica, has developed psychic abilities. These are of great benefit in trying to resolve the mystery of their new inheritance.

I am a huge fan of author Sheila Lowe, and have read most of her forensic handwriting series as well as the earlier volumes of this series, which uses many of the same techniques of logic and perception to try to make sense of the information being received, and discover all the whys and and wherefores. However, if you have read none of the proceeding tales, you will still have a completely standalone book that makes a perfect sense.

Suffice it to say, without spoiling plot, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this well narrated (by voice artist Anna Lowe) story. I may well listen to it again!
