A Good Morning America Buzz Pick

A Library Reads Pick

June Jones emerges from her shell to fight for her beloved local library, and through the efforts and support of an eclectic group of library patrons, she discovers life-changing friendships along the way.

Lonely librarian June Jones has never left the sleepy English village where she grew up. Shy and reclusive, the 30-year-old would rather spend her time buried in books than venture out into the world. But when her library is threatened with closure, June is forced to emerge from behind the shelves to save the heart of her community and the place that holds the dearest memories of her mother.

Joining a band of eccentric yet dedicated locals in a campaign to keep the library, June opens herself up to other people for the first time since her mother died. It just so happens that her old school friend Alex Chen is back in town and willing to lend a helping hand. The kindhearted lawyer's feelings for her are obvious to everyone but June, who won't believe that anyone could ever care for her in that way.

To save the place and the books that mean so much to her, June must finally make some changes to her life. For once, she's determined not to go down without a fight. And maybe, in fighting for her cherished library, June can save herself, too.

Such an empowering story. Shows there is always room to improve yourself and be the person you’ve always wanted to be. It’s never too late. Highly recommend. Great narration too!

This story took me a while to get into because it is slow going for a while. Overall a cute, light read, which I enjoyed.

Just okay

It’s a nice story. The character are diverse and have potential. Yet, something just falls flat. The whole story seems to have a kind of melancholy hanging over it. It is quite predictable, as well. It just never “hooked” me, so to speak.

It’s okay…

This is an excellent audiobook of saving the library. Even an extremely introverted person can find their passion for the right cause

I love this story of saving the library

I made fun of this book at first, with my husband, as I (sometimes we) listened to it on audible.com. I usually read/ listen to more “complicated” or “serious”’ or “classics” books. But this one was a book club selection.

I’m not usually a big fan of this book genre- Bridget Jone’s Diary sort of thing. The whole “I’m a loser, I’m too shy to exist, but we all know I’m gonna get the handsome guy at the end” genre. The main character is even named June Jones, btw. Maybe she and Bridgett are related somehow. Lol.

But it turned out to be quite good. The author does a great job building the characters and the story and making you care about them. The audible.com reader was very good. Except one accent, but I won’t say more as it would be a bit of a spoiler.

Also avoiding a spoiler, but… I have to say… something happens towards the end that many will say isn’t realistic. But I have personally seen it happen. So… it’s possible.

This book reminded me of “Because of Winn Dixie,” but with a library as the central character, not the lovable mutt.

I was walking my 2 mile walk as I listened to the last hour of this book, and by the end, I was getting a little teared up.

So my apologies to this book for starting out mocking it.

3.5 stars- surprisingly good for what it is

A charming book, well interpreted by the narrator. In a world that values flamboyance, an exploration of the experience of social anxiety is very welcome. Some of the tropes are a bit formulaic—the sudden inheritance, the devious developers, the salty octogenarian—by they are bearable in the company of the rest of the characters and the hovering presence of so many books. A feel-good listen!

Shyness explored
