Spellbinding!

Captured my attention from the 1st paragraph. Well-written.

David Gilmore did an excellent job bringing the characters to life.

Non Stop Thriller

The Last Air Ship is a non stop thriller from begin to end. Christopher Cartwright has created a great treasure hunt story that starts at the beginning of WWII, then moves to present time. The main character, Sam Reilly is fun to follow and leaves you wondering what he will do next. Character interaction was great The story continuously builds to the dramatic ending.

There is one romance scene that was a little too much "Romance Novel like" for me, but it did not detract from the book.

The narration was very good. David Gilmore used different voices for the characters, keeping the story easy to follow and interesting.

I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to listening to the rest of the series.

reminisce of Clive Cussler

similar writing style to Clive Cussler with enough differences to set him apart from him. there were a few inconsistencies in the book but not enough to throw off the flow to much. it was enjoyable to listen to as Cussler is one of my favorite authors. I can see this series going far if the author keeps keeps the the flow as it was.

Awesome Entertainment

I was given this free review copy audio-book at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This review is for the audio copy of The Last Airship - Sam Reilly, Book 1 by Christopher Cartwright and narrated by David Gilmore. I had listened to Book 10 of the Sam Reilly novels first. I really liked it so when I was offered this book to listen to for a review, I jumped at the chance. There was no disappointment in doing so. It is a great story off to a great start. David Gilmore is the voice of Sam Reilly. He does a great job at different voices and makes the stories come alive in my mind. I am going to listen to the entire series. It is that entertaining to me.

A New Clive Cussler for the Twenty-First Century

This is a novel that reminds me a lot of Clive Cussler. It starts with an “historic” flight—the last airship trying to escape from Nazi Germany with two super wealthy Jewish families and a very high-ranking Nazi with something critical to the war effort in his briefcase—something he doesn’t want Hitler to have. The ship is damaged by machinegun fire as it lifts off and it crashes in the Alps not to be seen again for 75 years. Let me just say now that the crash and why the airship had remained hidden from the many people who searched for it, was absolutely outstanding—just brilliantly thought out by Cartwright.

The story is also a lot of fun. Cartwright has two characters—Sam and Tom—that just make great heroes. They are daring, smart, but still capable of being fooled in ways that didn’t upset me as utterly stupid. The action is fast and furious, and I was happily turning pages (actually listening, but you know what I mean) from beginning to end.

If you’re looking for an actually thrilling “thriller” you should read this novel.

Interesting take on Airships.

I really enjoyed this book. The narrator kept it going and there was never a feeling of leaving you not knowing what is going on. Loved that the main characters were strong individuals in there own way. I will definitely read the next one.

Really neat twist starting in WW2

As a certified scuba and cave diver this was a fun and entertaining read.

Loved it!

This is the first book in the Sam Reilly Series. This is a great start to this Series. The storyline is suspenseful and captivating. David Gilmore did a great job with the narration. I enjoyed it. Looking forward to listen to the next book in the Series, The Mahogany Ship.

Great story and good character development. Reminds of Clive Cussler stories....hats off to the writer and look forward to the next one!

A Quest to Find a Missing Piece of History

Christopher Cartwright creates a modern day Indiana Jones called Sam Reilly. Reilly is the son of a wealthy man. A marine biologist by trade, he is wealthy in his own right. A clue leads Sam to search for a lost Zeppelin that fled Germany in 1939 and disappeared. The passengers were Jewish German citizens fleeing for their lives from the Nazis. On board were a wealthy couple with all their gold and jewels, and a man with a secret. He had created a deadly virus that could kill about 80% of the population. Hitler wanted this virus very badly, but the scientist could not let him have it.
Sam's search collides with a group searching for the virus. Along the way, he meets a beautiful woman named Aliana. Little does he know that their meeting was not by chance. She was sent by her father to stop Sam at all costs, but finds herself falling for Sam, and Sam for her. Together they find the ship and discover it's secret. Now they are in a rush to stop the rivals from getting their hands on the deadly virus.
Cartwright's writing is good and the characters are well developed. I can't say much good about the narrator, David Gilmore.
Gilmore has the delivery of an old time radio announcer or narrator of those government "educational films" seen in schools in the 50s and 60s. He has a limited range of voices, so many characters sound the same, or even start with one voice, only to have a different voice later, because he is using the original voice for someone else. He also has a tendency to make the lines sound like Father Knows Best, with a "Fine, everything's just fine" delivery even in dire situations.

Ignore Gilmore and pay attention to the writing and you can enjoy this series.
