Publisher's summary

A moving story of love, loss, and survival against the odds by best-selling author of The Last of the Bonegilla Girls, Victoria Purman.

It was never just a man's war....

Melbourne,1942

War has engulfed Europe and now the Pacific, and Australia is fighting for its future. For spinster Flora Atkins, however, nothing much has changed. Tending her dull office job and beloved brother and father, as well as knitting socks for the troops, leaves her relatively content. Then one day, a stranger gives her brother a white feather and Flora's anger propels her out of her safe life and into the vineyards of the idyllic Mildura countryside, a member of the Australian Women's Land Army.

There she meets Betty, a 17-year-old former shopgirl keen to do her bit for the war effort and support her beloved, and the unlikely Lilian, a well-to-do Adelaide girl fleeing her overbearing family and the world's expectations for her. As the Land Girls embrace their new world of close-knit community and backbreaking work, they begin to find pride in their roles. More than that, they start to find a kind of liberation. For Flora, new friendships and the singular joy derived from working the land offer new meaning to her life, and even the possibility of love.

But as the clouds of war darken the horizon, and their fears for loved ones - brothers, husbands, lovers - fighting at the front grow, the Land Girls' hold on their world and their new-found freedoms is fragile. Even if they make it through unscathed, they will not come through unchanged....

A Privilege to experience

wonderful narration of a must read book about Australian women during WW11. Genuinely heart moving. The sacrefice of family to keep our beloved country going. It was refreshing to read of South Australia a all too often forgotten state than has given so much to Austtralian history.
tears often flowed as the charectors were bought to life in a relaxed familiar way.
To wait until the 1990s for these wonderful women to be recognised by Canberra is a shame, most would have passed by then.
Thank You for writing this wonderful book and making us realize the work it took to produce the crops in the past .we have such machines now. There is a lesson too of attitude and respect working together with pride. something missing in today's society.

Tribute to Aussie spirit

The narrator brings this story to life. The highs & lows of the Women’s Land Army is a wonderful reflection of the strength of Australians in a time of conflict & confusion.

Good Aussie drama

A really interesting story about a time in Australian history that we don’t know much about. It was a bit slow to get going but I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it. The narration was also excellent.

Superb story from a superb author.

This latest from Victoria Purman about these almost forgotten women has been a joy. I've loved following three gutsy women, their loves and losses, joys and grief, and the men in their lives. I've loved the settings that we know so well in Adelaide, Mildura etc. The performance by Jennifer Vulacic was just right, lovely to hear that Australian accent telling the story.
It shows that gruesome images and violence can be shown without graphic detail, as can tender love scenes. While these do have a place in today's writing, in this instance allowing the reader to imagine, was for me, powerful.

Great! Fiction + Australian History

My first Audible book - wow what an introduction. Absolutely loved this story of the Australian Women's Land Army.
I am familiar with the writings of Victoria Purman, but to listen to it was something else.
The narrator,Julie Vuletic, transported me back to 1939 with her flawless reading of this captivating story and her descriptive voices for all the characters in the book. She made Flora, Lillian and Betty come to life. I laughed and shed a tear or two.
