Gold Standard of LITRPG

I've now listened to a number of LITRPG series that I truly like and have given 5 stars across the board to - The System Apocolypse by Tao Wong, Alpha World by Daniel Schinhofen, Ascend Online by Luke Chmilenko, and The Gam3 by Cosimo Yap - but, to me so far, gold standard is The Land. The completeness of integrating an RPG game with "real life" has been readily managed by the author, Aleron Kong.

Now, combine that with the talents of Nick Podehl, and you truly have an epic on your hands. He brings to life all of the characters in such a clever manner that I find it hard NOT to laugh at times, thanks to his way of expressing what is actually happening. Congrats to Aleron for injecting common day events and sayings into the script, so that Nick can expertly interpret them in voice.

As a gamer, and a listener of these books, there were many times I'd think, "This is what he's got to do now!" as we've found ourselves gaming with these events happening to our avatars. Usually, these are basic moves ... or, what we consider to be the most "logical" moves, as we've probably repeated them over and over and over ... again. Aleron Kong goes beyond the rote "next move" and weaves an intricate, yet refreshingly correct, path for our hero. One that I've consistently found interesting. The moves are correct, because our "hero" is flawed and doesn't always "go with the flow".

It's unique. It's gripping. And, it's just thoroughly enjoyable.

This entire series is an absolute MUST read!!

The Land series is hand's down one of the best, most entertaining series I have ever read (or listened to) in my almost 40 years of reading for pleasure. I have read countless series over the years and have many that make my short-list of favorites. The Land is one of the most brilliantly written, entertaining, enjoyable series I have ever had the pleasure to read. Along with serious and suspenseful moments where you just know your favorite character has no chance to make it out of the mess he's in, there are countless laugh out loud moments. And for those listening on Audible, Nick Podehl brings Aleron's characters to life in a way you will never appreciate until you listen. Before The Land, there were only 2 series that I enjoyed reading a second time. The Land brings that total to 3!

This is anything BUT "just another" LitRPG series. Whether you are a fan of epic fantasy, D&D, LItRPG, suspense, etc., or just a fan of pure entertainment, you have got to give this series a try. The first book starts off fast and furious, and Aleron has maintained that pace through the entire series. Read this series and you will find out why Aleron earned the title of Father of American LitRPG!

If you have tried other LitRPG series and found them lacking, try this one to see how it is really supposed to be done.

The BEST Audible Series Available!

You can stop reading reviews! Go listen to "The Land" now! I've listened to all 7 of the books "The Land" series has to offer at the time this review was written. That's 120 hours and 25 minutes of Nick Podehl narrating the words of Aleron Kong! Over 5 days straight of listening time and I want more! I never want it to end!

I am not an RPG guy. I've never before played an RPG board game. Don't let the RPG title deter you. Anyone will love this book because of the rich story telling, incredible characters, the world that Aleron Kong creates, and the masterful story telling! The incredible thing about these books is you start at square one with the main character, our hero Richter, and go on this grand adventure with him; growing and learning with him. Throughout the progression of these books it's impossible not to fall in love with the characters as you watch the world unfold around you. Aleron Kong's writing is relatable, funny, and emotional while being so descriptive that you will watch the world be painted before you. I'm always surprised by his hilarious use of crass and current humor intertwined with such a high level of writing.

The only thing better than Kong's story is Podehl's narration. I'm a television producer with a degree in theater, film, and television and I can honestly say Nick Podehl is a master storyteller. He should win all the awards! His narration is enthralling from start to finish. His characters are out of this world amazing! It never seems like someone doing voices, it just sounds like I'm listening to a myriad of different characters - like watching an animated series. Every character's voice is not only unique and perfectly suited for them, but even his speech patterns and intonations differ from character to character. Jim Henson himself would be impressed. And this is the very first audible book I've heard narrated by a male that can successfully do female characters just as well. I can listen for hours and continue being impressed every minute.

My one issue with the audible version of this book is that certain charts and figures can be daunting when listened to aloud, but sometimes you just have to let it wash past you as it's not imperative to the story. I would recommend this book 1 million percent. It is so worth listening to the audible version for Podehl's narration. Just be warned! Once you start you won't be able to stop.

Now where's the RPG Game! So vivid!

This has great character building. My son heard it while I was listening to it while I baking in the kitchen. He would hear the dings and come to tell me to find my phone....Then he realized it was part of the book. After he listed with me for awhile, he said it made him want to play the RPG game (if there was one). Throughout the book mention would be made of something that would remind me of other fantasy novels or games (mithril for instance). Like little bits and pieces were taken and put together into something new.
I play Lord of the Ring Online myself and I really enjoyed the references to leveling up and deciding where to put your points for skills, etc. But this was so entertaining. I have always enjoyed Nick Podehl as a narrator and he was an excellent choice for this series. People who don't play role playing games may not enjoy it as much as those who do, but it is still a fun, entertaining read. And maybe those who don't play RPG's might get a little enlightenment.

I’m HOOKED!

I listened to all seven books in The Land series in about 2-3 months via Kindle. That’s how much I loved the series! I haven’t been this invested in a book series since Harry Potter! As a Tabletop gamer, reading the series was such amazing self care for me! And have such a diverse and unique expanse of characters has me HOOKED! I’m sooo excited for the next book in the series!

Lot's of fun for any rpg fan.

loved the sound effects that came with leveling up or acquiring items. The author does a good job of making choices that a real person would make while playing a game making it more believable as well.

Amazing series through book 7!!

Amazing series through book 7!! Bringing together all of the elements of fantasy, adventure, RPG, and pop-culture references that keep it fresh. This series has great staying power, and after my third iteration I'm still finding new kernels of storylines and references. As always, Nick Podehl brings this story to life like few others can.

This RPG is LIT!

Would you listen to The Land: Founding: A LitRPG Saga again? Why?

Recently, I've been buying up pretty much every LitRPG I could get my grubby hands on. Sad to say, not every narrator is up to the task (I'm assuming struggling independant authors got a good deal in order to just get their work out there). This book, however? Not even in the same league! Nick Podehl is by far one of the greatest male narrators in the game right now, and securing him for this series only makes a great thing AMAZING.

The story starts simply, but gets deeper with every chapter, drawing you deeper into the world. Characters develop before your eyes, and plots unfold to lay bare even more complex mechinations. The main character is certainly on his way to becoming a bad-ass, but doesn't start out in god-mode, and he doesn't always make the right decision, but he LEARNS from his mistakes, and his attitude and decisions grow and reflect those experiences.

I'll be honest, I shamelessly listened to this book straight through in a single day. I bought the next book before I was even halfway through the first and had it downlowded and qued up so I could keep going even after this book was finished. I've read and listened to all the major LitRPG series out at the time I write this, and I can tell you with absolute surity that THIS series is already by far my favorite. This is the kind of series that others will hold up as the standard for the genre, and seek to emulate. I look forward to the rest of the series with true and unadulterated escitement! (^_^)

What other book might you compare The Land: Founding: A LitRPG Saga to and why?

None. THIS is the book other works should be comparing themselves against.

Have you listened to any of Nick Podehl’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, he does an amazing job in this book!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, absolutely. My chest swelled with the emotions of the main character at several points, when the character himself was overwhelmed with emotion.

After a quick purchase while on my way out of the country to the sun I wasn't expecting much. The combination of smart writing and an interesting plot idea has left me buying the next few books in the series.

I don't get the style of the "narrated RPG"

what this is, is an RPG game for someone who does not play games. the literary value of this is close to zero. and although there is a place for books that do not require any brain power whatsoever, I never thought that you can pay no attention to the content and yet know exactly what is going on.

Boring story with superb narration

I have bought this book, because of the great reviews. I can't recall a single moment when I was in doubt about the turns of the story. I think it was because there are no turns, or surprises. Go to X or Y location, understand the context, kill the bad guy, loot. Repeat over and over.

The narration is superb, but I do not recommend this book under any circumstances. Boring is an understatement.

Amazing series, worth the investment

This book and all others in the series I could not stop listening too. Aleron Kong has done an amazing job at bringing this world to life. the character development is amazing and makes me feel real nostalgic for the days I used to play MMORPGs

the only issue I had with this book was fixed in the books going forward. which was the loudness of the notification sound effects when items were obtained etc, this is fixed from book 2 onwards

5 star performance for nick too

it's ok.

The good: there are some good characters, and lots of funny moments, the world is decent enough.

The bad: it's slow, there's too much description of individual items, there's an annoying ding a lot, there's nothing about the real world once the main character leaves it.

Overall: it's enjoyable but lacks complexity.

Narrator was very good. Nice idea for a story, very entertaining. Not sure the stat updates and levelling up info translates well to audio, got a little repetitive.

There are much better options in the GameLit genre

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

That mountain seems too high to climb.

Has The Land: Founding: A LitRPG Saga put you off other books in this genre?

If this was the first novel I had read in the LitRPG/GameLit genre, i would have been put off. I certainly would not have had the same excitement I had when I read my first novel in this new genre, written by one of the Russian authors who coined the genre name, LitRPG. There are so many better examples in the LitRPG/GameLit genre.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance was okay, however it was completely ruined by the narrator’s use of sound effects. The constant and repititive bells ringing as the MC levelled up made it impossibke to listen to the book before bed as my partner could hear the noises through my noise cancelling headphones and I was unable to relax and listen to the story. The noises constantly broke my immersion.

What character would you cut from The Land: Founding: A LitRPG Saga?

The main character. I didn’t like the guy, which made it very hard to like the book. He had no back story and seems completely unphased by his new reality and the life he has left behind. His humour is sophmoric and he lacks any deeper inner life.

Any additional comments?

I wanted to like this audiobook but it had none of the elements, like a compelling, layered storyline and likeable characters that I care about, that make me lose myself in a story.

Rubbish

Kept on waiting for it to get better. Terrible story full of plot holes and a waste of time. I had just finished a Brandon Sanderson before picking this up which probably led to the huge feeling of dispointment. No where near the same league of writing.

That’s 4 hours I’ll never get back

This book was the worst piece of rubbish I have saver encountered, the fact that someone took the time to write RPG stats into a book and then repeat them over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, made it frustrating at the least. I had to turn it off after about 4 hours.
The story is thin on actual, well, story. If this is the future of contemporary fantasy literature the world is in dire straights!!!!! I’d also like to know how it got a 4.5 star rating on audible

The damn sound effects drove me nuts.

The sound effects were annoying at best. the constant DING with every, and i mean EVERY, notification or item and anything drove me nuts. It was unnecessary. Musical prompts with a new lvl or quest was exhausting, especially when he gains more than 1 lvl so it repeats for every lvl gained in a row speaking the same prompts over and over. simply combinimg all would have made it less ear splitting. I dont mind pop culture references but more than a few were just so lame. After listening to Ascend online and the amazing story that had this was not nearly as good, but the story is very interesting perhaps it gets better. get rid of the sounds and it definitely would. It was very difficult to be immersed in the story with the noises, bad jokes, odd descriptions just put me off too often. The narration was great, he did a good job with each voice, great range. too bad it was ruined by these points. I will listen to the next one with hope it improves.

An engaging LitRPG that is well narrated.

Where does The Land: Founding: A LitRPG Saga rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

With an excellent narrator, this audiobook is as immersive as any other LitRPG you will find.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that the story stayed a bit more in-line with gaming experiences and gradual power. While the character does seem unusually powerful to what a gamer might expect a 'character' to start as, this is not a "powerstomp" that you might expect from the Russian authors. If you enjoy the journey of the character, this story has it.

What does Nick Podehl bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Nick Podehl was a great narrator and gave Momma a hilarious accent.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There is perhaps one criticism to be had, and that is that the main character doesn't strike a lot of emotional chords. He seems very accepting of what has happened, spends almost no time adjusting, and while he has an admirable motive, he has yet to face real dilemma and challenge. That being said, this is the first book, and I expect more to come when the budding relationships kick off.

Any additional comments?

A great book. The author is ambitious in calling himself the "Father" of American LitRPG, but time will tell.

Love this series. Funny, action and great characters

This book had me at hello.
The audiobook (nick podehl) has the characters just right. (Specially muma). Quick humour, better fights and a gamers wet dream.
If you're into military scifi, fantasy and gaming, you will fall in love with this series and read it over and over.
Warning... you will buy the next books in the series and eagerly await the latest release, so allow time to immerse yourself in this ripper universe!
Thanks Aleron!!!

Not for me

If you like DND board games you will like this. Well i like a good fantasy fiction but this is not it, seems that stat menu's and quests come up with a toll bell, that rings all the time (its so annoying) and the main character starts off as a self centered power hungry guy put into a world that is running exactly like a board game, then desides to change to a guy that still wants power but to help others and build a better board game world, its not even his world why should he give a crap lol the guy doesnt even miss anything about his life in the real world( the guy must have had no life at all). 😥
