Publisher's summary

Discover the infinite possibilities of the “vertical dimension” of existence.

Eckhart Tolle has long taught a curious truth: You’re not your possessions. You’re not your career. You’re not the events of your life. You’re not even the contents of your mind.

So, who are you?

With The Journey into Yourself, this beloved teacher invites you to join him on an odyssey beyond the “horizontal dimension” of thought and into an aspect of our lives that most of us overlook: the “vertical dimension” beyond the reach of the mind. According to Eckhart, the vertical dimension might be better known as the present moment or the now - all that ever really is. And that includes you - the real you.

Recorded before a live audience at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York, The Journey into Yourself presents a rarely heard talk from early in Eckhart’s teaching career. Here you will encounter more than eight hours of practical, provocative, and occasionally hilarious teachings for awakening to who we are beyond the physical.

Highlights:

  • Why the phrase “life is a dream” is more accurate than you might expect
  • Piercing the veil of self-made suffering
  • The gentle and fierce aspects of embodied Presence
  • Why setbacks and discomfort are the most potent teachers
  • Wisdom teachings from Buddhism, Christianity, and Hindu traditions that point to the embodiment of Presence
  • Why right action can only arise from surrender to the moment

With The Journey into Yourself, Eckhart encourages you to step into the space between thoughts and discover the joyous treasures that lie within.

If your true self can’t be found in your job, your possessions, your body, or even the contents of your mind, then just who are you, anyway? Eckhart Tolle has long considered this question - and with The Journey into Yourself, he guides listeners on a fascinating exploration beyond conceptual identities and into the timeless consciousness of the present moment.

Great!

This lecture was very helpful re how to live in the present and how to live a more “zen” lifestyle. I haven’t read any Eckhart Tolle books yet but can’t wait to now!

Lessons in present moments and the mind-made self!

Eckhart again exceeds my expectations, altho he’d remark that I need none. The man who laughs like a loud annoying duck in heat, got to me too! i soon realized that he was a plant to test my patience and presence and so I could not resist listening again and again… His comment that “most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle to overcome” was flanked by Eckhart’s loud, prolonged laughter, bringing me right back to the wisdom of the teaching. In my most ardent study of what he says, how he says it and how I receive his teachings, I’ve tried to learn that whenever I become defensive, I know that I am identified with an illusion. We know how our ego loves an illusion, how it loves to feed on my pain-body and that exactly what I’m defending has no need to exist at all in a state of presence and mindfulness. His remarks about asking a child to name the little monster that takes the place of the heretofore angel, has helped me to better understand my 4y.o. granddaughter, who I dearly love. I’m hoping she will come up with a name I can remember and recognize when she transforms before my very eyes. His wisdom and humility are unparalleled by some of the best dharma teachers under which I have studied for some 20 years. Please keep writing, Eckhart, I’ll keep listening!

Mind Blowing- Literally

I have listened to the power of now, a new earth, and stillness speaks a few times and this is by far a wonderful addition to my collection. It deepens my understanding of what it means to be aware and awake in the present moment and be able to take right action from there. I found myself laughing at the human condition and my own mind in a healing way. I feel present as I listen. Very transformative. A gift to human beings everywhere. I would love to attend a retreat and sit in that field of energy with conscious people laughing and being.

Journey worth taking!

I enjoyed this so much that when I finish this review I will start all over again, I like many topics and as a mother really enjoyed his section on teaching kids how to be present. I had just tried recently teaching my 8 year old and upon saying the word “present” he had already drifted away from the conversation. There is so much value in what Eckhart teaches and I found this to be no less informative than his other books.

Tolle is a master.

Insight into the inner eye. Who we are in the moment is explored and many useful pointers are given. Below my mind, I see.

Great content as always but meditations are better

The format of this book is not as good as the studio recorded books. The content is as interesting as and intriguing as the other books by Tolle that likely led you here. But sounds from the audience at the event that is the occasion of this book add a complication not present in his studio recorded works. He employs sound effects and humor throughout this book to connect with the audience and there is awkward laughter in places when people aren't sure if he intends to be funny or serious. And I have to make particular mention of that one person in the audience with the extremely obnoxious laugh. It wasn't clear to me whether he (the laugher) was being intentionally disruptive or not. But disruption was the result. I probably contradict the philosophy that is the basis of the book by just mentioning the audience. But for me it was an unwelcome distraction that might have caused me to skip the book had I known in advance.
