Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was an American novelist and playwright who, in 1930, became the first American to win the Nobel Prize for literature. The Job is one of his earliest novels. Concerning the exploits of a 1920s career woman, it is one of the first novels about feminism and is considered one of the stepping stones towards Lewis' success.

Excellent Early Lewis

The Job was published in 1917 and is an early novel of Sinclair Lewis considered trailblazing for its day because the main character is a woman trying to make a living in the hustle and bustle business world of New York City, which was almost exclusively male dominated outside the secretary position.

Our protagonist, Una Golden, moves from a small town in Pennsylvania to New York City in the early 1900s to attend business college but ends up dropping out when she can’t afford tuition. She joins a steno pool and does well, and eventually moves up in the business world. She fights the stereotypes of professional women of that time and puts up with boorish male behavior.

While struggling to climb the ladder in her job, she longs for a relationship but finds a good man is hard to find, dating-wise and especially when it came to coworkers and bosses. The novel is full of interesting characters and good drama. And this was a fascinating look at what office life was like in the early 20th century, if you like that sort of thing. Overall I found this to be well told and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I hated the story

It is too sad. I hate woke stories. So glad it is over. The ending was not too bad.
