Story
Johnny Shooter was sentenced to hang at noon. But Judge Isaac Parker, widely known as the "Hanging Judge", made Johnny an offer he couldn't refuse. The judge made him a Deputy United State Marshal, then sent his new deputy after the worst-of-the-worst outlaws the Indian territory had to offer, with the orders not to burden the court by bringing them back for trial. Now, rumor has it that whenever outlaws gather around a campfire, the word is: "The only thing worse than standing before the Hanging Judge is hearing that Johnny Shooter is on your trail!"

Story
In the early 1870's, the young state of Texas was struggling to survive. Its vast, undeveloped land of over 260 thousand square miles became a haven for the lawless. Murderers, rustlers and renegade bands of hostile Indians and Comanchero roamed the vast wastelands of west Texas with only a narrow river separating them from the sanctuary of Mexico. One group of dedicated lawmen stood between this element and the law-abiding citizenry - the Texas Rangers. This is the story of one of those men.

Their trail led him halfway across the country and deep into Mexico. He came west to the Rockies as a young runaway and grew into a legend among the already legendary frontier mountain men. They called him Preacher - a name that would become a monument to all who sought adventure in the savage wilderness of America's untamed west. The only man with the skills to lead a wagon train on the last leg of the rugged Oregon trail, Preacher knows they're headed into trouble. It's hard enough for a hundred greenhorns to survive the wilds of the northwest; being pursued by thieving renegade outlaws and Indians with a thirst for gold makes it damn near impossible.

Engaging
It has been sometime since I read a western so thought it might make a nice change of pace. The story starts off in the late 1800 with a familiar western theme; three young brothers, Frank, Bob, and Jesse have just buried their parents. They face starvation and are desperate, so off they go to find work so they can eat.
Rhodes tells the story of each of the brothers in his usual interesting style. The story tells of how they learned skills and developed into hard working honest men. Rhodes is a great story teller and he can keep my attention throughout the book.
I think the narrator Gene Engene has the perfect voice for narrating a western.

Refreshing read
In a day when evil seems to triumph, it is refreshing to read stories where the good-guys win. Dusty Rhodes writes really good stories that not only entertain, they simply make one feel better about life - even is what you are reading is fiction. I've really enjoyed all his books so far.

A very good Western Book
This story is a very good read. The story line is very interesting with a lot of action. This book follows " The Longhorn" series & keeps your interest the same. They both holds your attention to the very in. After reading "The Isoms" books 1 & 2, I would recommend reading "The Longhorn" series.

Same story line?
I enjoyed this book, but the story line is very similar to the Longhorn series. I enjoyed the Longhorn series also. Sometime I like a book with
multiple twist and turns, a variety of characters and a little mystery. Other times, its nice to sit back and just listen to the story. It does not need to be difficult to follow, it can be enjoyed. However, I would like a new story for my money & time investment.

Superhuman Threesome
Good narration, except I couldn't easily understand some of the deliberately garbled or querulous voices. This is book 1 of 2 in a Western historical fiction series. Rhodes employs a standard writing style, told in 3rd person in linear chronology. No pesky scene hopping!
A feel-good story. Plot is not very credible — a romanticized portrayal of three superheroes taming the lawless West (Texas and Kansas mainly). They find romance and riches while stomping out corruption. There is a wolf-dog in some scenes. I liked those best, and wanted more.
The three Isom brothers (Frank is 23, Bob 21, Jesse 17) grew up in a peaceful enough small farming community in Missouri, with no knowledge of the ruthless world. However, when their beloved mama dies they head West together, and miraculously hey-presto handle every murdering scum the world sends their way, easily and quickly.
Bob is the charismatic handsome spokesman for the brothers, and this is mainly his story, but the three make key decisions by democratic vote. With assured aplomb they confront murderous gunslingers and cattle rustlers, taking on absurd odds.
The author tries to portray them as honorable, hat-tipping, hard-working, self-disciplined men who protect the weak, while they blow killers away with a hidden shotgun. Or hang em from the highest tree. Not that they didn't all deserve it. And the brothers wore a badge. Sometimes. But still...
I liked this book at first but it got too predictable. When I realized these boys were golden, untouchable, suspense went out the window.
Ends abruptly, when Bob's cattle drive arrives in Abiline, Kansas, where Bob hopes to marry the beautiful Rachel. Didn't read the sequel, part two. Skimmed the last chapters.
