Publisher's Summary

Written with the verve of such works as The Big Short, The History of the Future, and The Spider Network, here is the fascinating, true story of the rise of Ethereum, the second-biggest digital asset in the world, the growth of cryptocurrency, and the future of the internet as we know it.

Everyone has heard of Bitcoin, but few know about the second largest cryptocurrency, Ethereum, which has been heralded as the "next internet".

The story of Ethereum begins with Vitalik Buterin, a supremely gifted 19-year-old autodidact who saw the promise of blockchain when the technology was in its earliest stages. He convinced a crack group of coders to join him in his quest to make a super-charged, global computer.

The Infinite Machine introduces Vitalik’s ingenious idea and unfolds Ethereum’s chaotic beginnings. It then explores the brilliant innovation and reckless greed the platform - an infinitely adaptable foundation for experimentation and new applications - has unleashed and the consequences that resulted as the frenzy surrounding it grew: increased regulatory scrutiny, incipient Wall Street interest, and the founding team’s effort to get the Ethereum platform to scale so it can eventually be accessible to the masses.

Financial journalist and cryptocurrency expert Camila Russo details the wild and often hapless adventures of a team of hippy-anarchists, reluctantly led by an ambivalent visionary, and lays out how this new foundation for the internet will spur both transformation and fraud - turning some into millionaires and others into felons - and revolutionize our ideas about money.

great story, good audiobook

thrilling and intriguing ethereum backstory . narrator has great voice but reading monotonous like computer generated youtube audio... reader needs to get past mispronounced tech terms, like get-hub. overall, though, well worth the time and money

Well researched and informative

4.5 of 5 stars.

Camila Russo has written a highly informative history of the development of Ethereum and the broader world of crypto currencies. Unlike many modern “journalists”, Ms. Russo actually performed the actual research and conducted the interviews to narrate the development of this world changing technology. Told from the perspective of multiple primary participants who are often at odds with one another, The Infinite Machine is an enjoyable read which goes into some of the high level mechanics of Ethereum, Bitcoin and the other crypto currencies which are the next technological paradigm shift.

The narration is solid but a bit monotone at times. It doesn’t detract from the story however. Recommended for investing and crypto enthusiasts.

Ethereum’s “Digital Gold”

Camila Russo does an incredible job documenting the origins of the Ethereum network.

A great story! Ethereans finally have their own “Digital Gold”.

Good overview

As someone who's been there through all of this, I could relate to it all and had a hard time not feeling nostalgic or almost tearing up at some of the flashbacks the book took me through. The narrator is okay but has some strange pronunciations (ConensSYS, e-doubleu-a-es-em for eWASM, Is.tan.bul. for Istanbul) and sometimes sounds robotic, but generally very good. I wish this book had been published 6 months later so it could have documented what DeFi had become in the meanwhile, and also the launch of Eth2 phase 0, but maybe a second edition will catch up.

All in all highly recommended historical overview for anyone who wants to know what this Ethereum stuff is all about.

This is an epic glimpse into the world machines

It deserved better narration than a bot, so much detail that it just needs a more emotive and charasmatic retelling.

Much to be learned from the past!

This book was fantastic! A detailed history of Ethereum written in a very captivating way! It’s an entertaining ride but also extremely educational. I feel as though I have a much better understanding of the blockchain space, including which projects (and former Ethereum founders) what to truly add value and push blockchain technology forward into the new era of the Web3 internet! I look forward to when this inevitably gets adapted into a Vitalic Buterin biopic directed by David Fincher!

Gives full blown taste of Ethereum - worth reading

First of all - just for reference, I had no background in cryptocurrency & markets and technologies before I read this book. Now I know quite something. and I recommend it to anyone who is a beginner.
Laura Jennings - voice is clear, good and fast-paced.
Camilla Russo's material is very well organized and the choice of coverage is also pretty good.
1. The book starts with a quick warm-up of what is to come in the book,
2. Chapter-wise she lays out all major offshoots of the Ethereum project, in more or less chronological order to give colour to what happened and why it happened.
3. She importantly covers all major characters of Ethereum and gives their history - this helps to understand their motivations to get into Ethereum and understand the motivation for such technology. It was easy to imagine the characters.
4. Book provides cursory technical info - just enough for the curious minds to delve deeper themselves. It took me 14 days to finish the book as I was totally immersed and verifying/checking tweets, websites, products, terms mentioned in the book to fully get it. I made my notes to develop the content for myself further.
For me, this was a great reference book
5. For younger readers - wanting to do something bold, I think it's a great insight into the expected psychological hurdles (of dealing with people, media) and be prepared, hard work & persistency needed to grow a successful something.

Fantastic document of Ethereum’s histori

A must-listen for anyone with even a casual interest in this cutting edge technology and the exceptional people behind it. Digestible and non-jargonny. The people that made Ethereum are just incredible.

A very well written story of the ETHEREUM

Incredibly insighfull story of Ethereum and it's community, the decentralized movement and $crypto euphoria '17. You won't find a better description of the DAO hack. A good book to refresh the memory, for Bitcoin maxis, (no)coiners, noobs, researchers, investors
#ETH + #ETC=❤
A female voice of the narrator is a bonus for sure!
