Publisher's summary

Picture this: It's 2050. The looming shadow of climate change is finally receding. The planet's temperature is stabilising. Rainforests and coral reefs beginning to thrive once more. We are returning to equilibrium with nature.

This isn't wishful thinking; it can be our reality. We just need to embrace hydrogen: the missing link.

The beauty of hydrogen is its simplicity. It's simple to make, and simple to use. You are essentially bottling sunlight from renewable energy sources in the form of hydrogen, and using it to bring clean energy to every corner of the globe. The best part about hydrogen is that when you use it, the only by-product is water.

As energy expert Marco Alverà explains, if we're going to heal the climate, we need to start thinking big. This book is the blueprint for how to get us there. Whether you are a policy maker, a business person, an activist, or simply curious, the message is this: there is hope, for us and our planet. Hydrogen can help save the world.

Critic reviews

"Engaging, authoritative and very timely. Marco Alverà spells hydrogen's critical role as an energy store in the clean power transition." (Mike Berners-Lee, author of There Is No Planet B)

Excellent. A handbook about the hydrogen industry

I'm a lawyer in the energy industry, that have been following closely all things about hydrogen.

First I would like to say that it was a joy to listen to this book. Written in a clear and accessible manner, it explains instructively the current uses, the potential for the future and the existing choking points in the hydrogen industry.

For newcomers, I suggest you to read it before anything else. For the more experienced, it is a great recap that should be listened periodically.

A Ray of Hope for Our Energy Future

Matthew Spencer is a great reader even if at times it seems he is channeling C3PO in his delivery. I listened to at x1.2 speed to pick the pace up a little. As someone who works within the gas industry who has received materials/flyers/pocketbooks/quick guides from the company talking about Hydrogen, I was filled with so many questions. This book has answered all of them and so much more.

I loved this and I will likely listen again to reinvigor that knowledge and catch bits I missed this time around.

Fascinating and hopeful

This book paints the energy network in incredibly clear strokes, giving a comprehensive overview and understanding of the whole matter. Hydrogen seems to be popping up in the news more and more and here, Alvera has made a great case for how, where and when it can potentially fit into the whole energy puzzle. Though he's clear that we've a long way to go, I feel hopeful for the first time in a while that maybe there is a sliver of hope for the future of our planet.

enthralling

If you haven't bought in to the mainstream catastrophist narrative about impending climate doom, you may be put off by the leading chapters.

But if you are willing to put that aside, you will find this an intriguing and compelling exploration of the potential of hydrogen as a central player in a decarbonised economy.

I came to this audio with a view that hydrogen would be critical as a process input (eg steel making & ammonia production) and perhaps as a specialist fuel in some forms of transportation. However I was very sceptical of its centrality in the mainstream delivery & storage of energy. I am now less sceptical.
