Great performances, but story was a let down

The plot was very generic. Poor girl envies rich popular girl. Shallow characters. Great performances made it listenable.

Good but not great

Although the location and setting of this story sounded really interesting I was let down overall. I did finish the book but it was more curiosity to get it over with that a real desire to know who did it and how the story ended.I didnt feel any suspense and the strange drug dealer part just felt thrown into it and unbelieveable. None of the characters were likable...in fact quite the opposite. If I had attended this party I would have happily killed all of them.

Takes nearly the whole book for anything to happen

Not at all what I was expecting. Hours of descriptions of relationships among a group of privileged 30-somethings from London. Most are friends from university who meet up annually to have a hedonistic few days over-indulgiing in expensive food and drink and playing silly pranks. This get-together is in a remote hunting lodge in the Scottish Highlands that ends with them being cut-off by bad weather: shades of Agatha Christie. Full of stereotypical characters none of whom are likeable. The staff comprise a dour gamekeeper and a female manager both full of pain from their pasts, plus a handyman who figures little for most of the story. Someone gets murdered but the narrative meanders among the relationships going back and forth in time and told from the perspective of the various characters. It's not until the last half hour of so of the recording that anything much happens when the murderer is revealed at breakneck speed. There's little build-up to the denouement. The murder is really just a side issue in a chick-lit type of novel.
The narrators are good.

The Hunting party

I've listened to over 90 books over the last year so am some what of a heavyweight when it comes to audio.
I didn't like this book when I started it but slowly got into although it never really gripped me.. The characters in the group are horrible and part of me was hoping they would all be butchered and served as a main course.
It was an easy listen and was also narrated nicely.

A bit wet

Oxford students who can’t light a fire, Macho outdoorsy man. Bitchy women. Some fairly thin, tired caricatures here.

Utter rubbish

This book was a complete mess full of cliches and bad writing - every character had "secrets" which were so transparent and could be seen from a mile. It didnt make sense at all why the others will hang out with the main character who was terrible to everyone but "really beautiful". At some point they play truth or dare and one of the characters chooses dare because she could not tell the truth, even though she has been lying about things for years - completely ridiculous. I would not waste my time or my money on this.

Highly recommended... a brilliant book

This is a SUPERB modern take on a murder who done it. A thrilling page turning read brought to life through superb characterisation and brilliant twists and turns in the plot. I couldn’t finish it quick enough.

Very clever plot means you keep listening

The characters in this story were not wildly interesting to me but the plotting was brilliant & there were also a few moments when the writer showed great insight. Some of the voices are annoying, the endless eating of smoked salmon & drinking of champagne plus references to make up & clothes is mildly tedious but it is worth persisting & overall an enjoyable distraction on a long drive or while doing a dull but mindless task

Unusual Exceptional Thriller with Great Narration

Loved this thriller set in an exclusive luxury Scottish Highland hunting lodge and it felt like I too had been invited for a mysterious mini-break with an eclectic mix of old college friends. Loved the narration which really brought the story and characters to life. Having such a big cast really added an extra dimension to the performance and although I did not actually like any of the characters per se, they were all very engaging, and intriguing.
So many plots, subplots, twists, turns and interesting character dynamics and backstories that blended together with the superb narration into a really absorbing and immersive listen - a big screen blockbuster among audio books.
I am really looking forward to the next Lucy Foley book as this really was a great treat which I devoured with gusto and head and shoulders above most of the thrillers out there, plus what an exceptional performance - 6 STAR WINNER !!!

Terribly predictable.

The initial premise promised so much bit you pretty much predict the whole story after the first few chapters. I kept listening as some of the character development seemed promising but alas, they all turn out to be the predictable steriotypical characters they first appear to be.

We all wear masks....

Totally loved the twists, turns & drama that The Hunting Party had to offer.

The desolation setting, with the murder & not knowing which guest it was that was murdered & by whom was brilliant - the voice actors for this Audio were also a great way to emerge the listener into the “gang” & see how each person related & the connections that bound the different levels of friendship...

The masks that each wore to carry the persona of happy, successful lives, not the struggles & turmoils that each character really was dealing with made the story more relatable.

Throughly enjoyed this book ❤️

Maybe next time

Finding it a real struggle to get into this one. Putting it aside for now.
The narration makes it difficult to 'pick up where you left off'. Maybe my life is too busy to enjoy it at the moment. Keeping it in my library, but definitely need a little more down time to have another crack at it.
