This Newbery Honor classic, illustrated by a Caldecott Medalist, is a beautifully written tribute to the power of kindness, acceptance, and standing up for what's right.

Wanda Petronski is ridiculed by her classmates for wearing the same faded blue dress every day. She claims she has one hundred dresses at home, but everyone knows she doesn’t. When Wanda is pulled out of school one day, the class feels terrible, and classmate Maddie decides that she is ""never going to stand by and say nothing again.""

A timeless, gentle tale about bullies, bystanders, and having the courage to speak up.

This book is important for kids to read- a small group of 5th graders used this for a book study,
;the various revelations gave shock-awe, meaningful discussions were provoked, interesting vocabulary reviewed, etc. HOWEVER… How the narrator gave voice to Wanda was lacking, did her a disservice by making her sound anything other than soft spoken- she had her give gremlin vibes. Miss Mason/teacher’s voice was the epitome of nails-on-a-chalkboard awful. She might’ve considered reading the words of Mr.Petronski with an accent, to help get the sense of ‘broken’ English across. The narrator also mispronounced two names.
Please go forth nonetheless- I HIGHLY RECOMMEND WAITING TO LISTEN TO The Letter to the Reader last- SPOILER ALERTS GALORE.

A+++ BOOK, questionable narration

This is a sweet easy to read story with a very deep meaning, it’s so strange to me how a story written so many years ago can often have the exact same meaning in the current day. It’s a lesson we all need to hear over and over and over again.

Every girl in America should read this!
