Publisher's Summary

Anna is content with her well-ordered life in San Francisco. But her world is turned upside down when her beloved grandfather, Max, reveals a startling secret: Anna is part of an aristocratic family who lost everything during World War II. What's more, Max was forced to leave behind a precious item over 70 years ago in their estate in old Prussia. It's now his ardent wish that Anna retrieve it.

Anna burns with questions as she heads for Germany: What memento could be so important to her grandfather? And why did he keep their history hidden? As she searches for answers, she finds herself drawn to Wil, a man who may hold the key to unlock the mystery. Together they discover that her family's secrets are linked with an abandoned apartment in Paris, and these secrets go deeper than she ever imagined.

Alternating between 1930s Europe and the present, The House by the Lake illuminates the destiny of a family caught in the tumult of history.

Engaging Listen

The House by the Lake is a story about family secrets, loyalty, love, and loss. Anna knows very little about her grandfather's earlier life in Germany, until she takes a chance to explore the place where he grew up prior to WW II. Teri Schnaubelt did a fantastic job of dealing with multiple accents in a very credible and memorable way. The characters were all well-defined, and you always knew who was speaking in the dialogue. Teri made Ella Carey's words come alive and it was an extremely enjoyable listening experience.

A bit cheesy

This is the second book I have read recently relating to the apartment found intact in Paris (the other was The Velvet Hours). This was entertaining but cheesy. How many times did the author describe people 'sounding close by'? I counted at least five. Why is everyone wearing "black polo sweaters"? And just what is a polo sweater? Why is a boat at an abandoned house's lake still tied to its mooring and sound after possibly years? Lots of holes and stretches.

Good story, lacked depth

I was hoping this would be a new Kate Morton ,Belinda Alexander, or Jennifer O'Donnell type book. The story line was an interesting one, but the characters lacked depth, the story didn't give a "feel" of the time period.
The female current time protagonist seemed socially awkward, but no reason was given except vague references to a mother that died, and a father that disappeared.
The narrator did a good job with the German and French accents.

Didn't want it to end

I listened to the audio version and completely became engrossed in the story to the point I didn't want it to end. I love historical fiction especially WWII era and this book takes a different spin on it. It's great to find a book with outcomes you didn't see coming. There are still missing pieces that I wanted to know but are in keeping with all the secrets. Excellent book.I

Awful narration

What did you like best about The House by the Lake? What did you like least?

I disliked it so much that I quit listening to it.

Would you recommend The House by the Lake to your friends? Why or why not?

Not in audiobook format.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her accents made it impossible to follow. Even her regular American accent was awful. The non-American were even worse.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Nope.

Tiresome and cliched

A painful slog does not quite describe this book because it was less than that. I gritted my teeth and bore it to the end so as to give it a fair shake, which in retrospect was a mistake. I guess one positive is that I've now learned my lesson to cut my losses early in books that sound dismally uninteresting from the get. Anyway, the forced dialog which took itself too seriously while it was overstuffed and shallow, along with the fabricated conflicts were quite too much to bear. The main character's school girl coyness, idiotic musings and insecurities were also downright irritating. Overall, I found the book boring and without depth and found myself rolling my eyes with the formulaic predictability. And it finally ends just as underwhelming as it started, if not more so...In short, I was not a fan.

Wonderful!

I loved this story! Hooked me in from the beginning and made me want to stay in my car just to continue listening. Glad to see there are 2 more books that go with this one and have definitely snagged them up. Only downfall...it ended leaving me with questions and wanting more! Highly recommended 🙂

Great story

This is a very good story comparing the past and present with each other. Am enjoying the other stories by Ella Carey as well.
