Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

From number one best-selling author Lisa Jewell, author of The Family Upstairs, Watching You and Then She Was Gone.

An unforgettable story about a family with a terrible secret.

When a tragedy breaks a family apart, what can bring it back together?

The Birds seem to be the perfect family: mother, father, four children, a picture-book cottage in the country.

But one Easter weekend, something happens - something so unexpected, so devastating, that no-one can bring themselves to talk about it.

The family shatters, seemingly for good.

Until, years later, they are forced to return to the house they grew up in and to confront what really broke the family apart.

Amazing stuff. !

This book is so well written , it should be a drama on TV. It was gripping. I wasn't sure of it at first, but I soon got hooked. Its not a book to listen to if you want to be cheered up , but it's so good that you won't want to stop listening. There is not a boring page in it. My first book by Lisa Jewel and will be reading / listening to more. I think the narrator was perfect for the book. I don't get why so many people complained. She did the voice so perfectly of the main character I could imagine her easily. It's the type of book that needs a thoughtful and dreamy narrator, if people are so nitpicking, why do they bother paying for Audible ?

Great story, awful narrator!

Definitely a 5* worthy novel ruined by terrible narration. I sped it up to 1.25, which helped a bit but nothing can help the awful accent attempts. Still, another jewel from Lisa Jewell!!

Awful narration.

I liked the book and the premise. The narrator was absolutely AWFUL. The accent of the Irish character in particular very nearly made me unable to continue to listen to it. I persevered however as I wanted to hear the rest of the story. I can't believe it was approved as a release by such a respected author though.

The only audio by Lisa Jewell I have not enjoyed!!

I think this is possibly the 18th audio of Lisa Jewell that I've listened to, and the ONLY one I've really not enjoyed. In fact looked forward to its ending. This is largely due to the narrator. When people mention this when they write reviews, it always always stands out to me, I used to feel I'd just be able to deal with it or even unhear it, but no!!! Terrible accents.
I felt like turning it off every time I heard the words "kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss"
The story also lacked a little but of substance for me. I am honestly gutted, as each and every book by Lisa I have LOVED!!!! But NOT this one.
Glad I listened, purely to say I've listened to all her audios. Next one is out on 21st I believe.
Not long. Still an absolutely massive fan, she is my top 5 authors 🙏🏾

Gripping

What a wonderful book. Gripping from start to finish. What this book does really well is despite the fact we get to know many characters, it explores all of their stories perfectly.

Throughly recommended!

Perfect narration and an original story

Great character development in this novel and the narrator really brought them to life. Did not want the story to end.

Loved the story

I loved this book, another one from Lisa Jewell which I binged through. My only criticism is the “Aussie” accents on the couple of Aussie characters. Apart from that I loved everything about it. The reading was a bit slow, so I sped it up to 1.1x

Fabulous fabulous fabulous book

Can’t say enough about this book - one of her best. I loved it so much. A book about family, about dysfunction, tragedy, struggle, mistakes, growth and love. I loved seeing all the characters growing up and going through life. Absolutely delightful book darling as Lauralee would say ❤️❤️

Not sure what I expected..

Oh man, I love Lisa Jewell’s other books but this one really fell flat. I kept waiting for the twist and was very underwhelmed at the end. Would not recommend.
