Story
After the brutal murder of an art gallery owner, the beautiful and mysterious artist Holly Troy seems to be the key to finding out what really happened on the night of the homicide. Unfortunately, Holly also suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and many of her personalities come straight from classical mythology, from the powerful Cronos and Pandora to the fickle Fates. Holly has no idea who she was the night of the crime - whether she witnessed anything, or even if she was the killer herself. Homicide detective Orson Cheever must unravel the complex labyrinth of Holly’s mind before he can find the truth.

As fans know, Chet first met Bernie on that fateful day when he flunked out of K-9 police school. The details of that day, though, have always remained a little vague (like so much in Chet’s doggy brain). All we know is that Chet had been the best leaper in his K-9 class, but for some reason he failed his final leaping test...and that a cat was involved...and that there was some blood. But whose?

Publisher's Summary
“Cleverly crafted and enormously enjoyable.” -Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine
When the security director of the posh Hotel California abruptly departs, assistant manager Am Caulfield steps into the role. The newbie hotel detective is quickly overwhelmed when a murder-mystery weekend descends on the hotel at the same time as a Bob Johnson convention (yes, the attendees are all named Bob Johnson) - and that’s before a bra thief strikes, a contractor leaps to his death, and two more dead bodies turn up.
Mayhem has checked in to the Hotel California. So, as it turns out, has a murderer. Like the little Dutch boy, Am must try and plug one leak after another. Will he be able to get the job done before yet another hotel guest checks out forever?

If you insist on insulting 62 million voting legal US citizens in their choice of President, you are likely to get dissatisfied readers. Especially if the story is a mediocre one.

Humor, Suspense, and a GREAT Story!
I decided to give "The Hotel Detective" a shot after thoroughly enjoying the Gideon and Sirius series by Alan Russell. Russell's humorous and engaging writing coupled with Jeff Cummings' narration is again a great combination. As a person who grew up in San Diego, I loved the vivid detail of the locations as the story progressed.
In short, this was another home run by Russell and highly recommend to any fans of mystery and suspense. I just downloaded "The Fat Inkeeper" and will be listening to that tonight!

All you wanted to know about running a hotel.
I liked the story. It wasn't as entertaining as the Gideon books, but it was chock full of info on the running of a huge resort hotel. The quirky humor of Mr. Russell is there. The characters were very interesting.

Wild ride and thoroughly entertaining
This book has a lot of moving pieces that you need to pay attention to or you will get lost. I docked 1 star from the story for getting political. I am not a fan of the current President but entertainment stories should stay vague on political leaders to avoid alienating a portion of their audience.

Story
Smashed skull, snapped ribs, and a cloying smell of carrion. Leave the body for the hyenas to devour - no body, no case. But when Kalahari game rangers stumble on a human corpse midmeal, it turns out the murder wasn't perfect after all. Enough evidence is left to suggest foul play. Detective David "Kubu" Bengu of the Botswana Criminal Investigation Department is assigned to the case.
