In 19th-century England, Kate and her sister Emily return to the family estate after their father dies. There, under the guardianship of a distant uncle, they live in a small lodge with two great-aunts. One evening while out late and unable to find their way home, they encounter a nest of goblins. This is one of my favorite books, audio ruins it.

This has been one of my favorite books for years! I literally had to stop listening to the audio book because it was destroying the version of it I had in my head! I know that sounds like just my opinion, but the woman reading it sounds so old, and turned it from a fun loving book about a strong teenage girl, into a stiff story about harsh characters. I hated every choice the woman reading it made.

GREAT Fantasy Trilogy

What made the experience of listening to The Hollow Kingdom the most enjoyable?

The Hollow Kingdom is the first in a trilogy that has become my absolute favorite fantasy series. The characters are appealing and the plot is riveting.

What did you like best about this story?

The evolution of Marak and Kate's relationship is one of the best parts of the book.

Which character – as performed by Jenny Sterlin – was your favorite?

Marak is the goblin king. While ostensibly ugly, Marak appeals to the audience through his sense of humor and love for his people.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Magic in the Mist

Any additional comments?

This book keeps you riveted from beginning to end. Be sure to read the rest of the series; it only gets more interesting! Jenny Sterlin does a fantastic job of narrating this book. I sincerely hope that she will narrate the rest of the series!

Very enjoyable

Where does The Hollow Kingdom rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Somewhere in the middle. It was very enjoyable.

What other book might you compare The Hollow Kingdom to and why?

The novelization of Labyrinth because, I mean, this is basically a huge Labyrinth fanfiction lol

What does Jenny Sterlin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really love the voice she gives the goblin king. it's very sexy and I don't know if I would have "read" him that way

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Once you are chosen, there is no escape

Any additional comments?

Ugh, the narration

I read this back in my adolescence, enjoyed the hell out of it, only later found out it was a series and devoured them all. It's a much better take on a monster romance than... others of similar ilk (I'm looking at you, Sparkles).

But, to my horror upon downloading this, the narrator was an old proper British lady who would have been way happier to tell you all the local gossip over tea. Her male character voices are laughably bad at best and cringingly intolerable at worst. Just go read the book.

(Side note: I recommend a physical copy. Whoever the publisher was did a great job, because it has that perfect book smell! Good weight to each page... I'm nerding out over physical properties of a single book. Just go read it, you'll enjoy it.)

Unexpected Classic

What did you love best about The Hollow Kingdom?

First the narrator was perfect in her diction, her inflections, she really, really made me feel as if I were actually in the story. And as for the author, she definitely has not only a way with words but her humorous side definitely shows through her characters. I can't say that there was anything about this book that I did not like.

What did you like best about this story?

Everything

Which scene was your favorite?

Kate's struggle to overcome Marek in the manor

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Kate rushes back to Marek

Any additional comments?
