  • Motivating ADHD Kids & Your Questions with Dr. Emily King
    Sep 23 2025

Parenting kids with ADHD can feel like walking a line between wanting to help and needing them to be independent. This week, we’re joined by our friend Dr. Emily King, a child psychologist who has spent over 20 years supporting families, schools, and kids with ADHD, autism, anxiety, and learning differences. Dr. Emily joins us to talk about how to support kids with ADHD and answer your questions.

From teachers wondering how to support executive functioning in the classroom, to parents of teens who can ace calculus but can’t find their water bottle, Dr. Emily gives practical, compassionate advice that helps all of us breathe a little easier. She talks about why ADHD brains don’t always learn best in classrooms, how to balance correction with confidence-building, and the importance of finding your child’s joy—whether that’s on the soccer field, the stage, or in the pages of a favorite book.

In true Laugh Lines form, there’s also plenty of laughter especially as Penn invents a new segment involving “nuggets.” If you’ve ever wondered how to motivate your ADHD kid without crushing their spirit—or if you’re just looking for reassurance that you’re not alone in this—this episode is for you. We love to hear from you, leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. You can also watch our podcast on YouTube.

  • Open Door, Not Empty Nest with Gretchen Rubin
    Sep 16 2025

At first, I thought I was doing great with college drop-off (I even bragged to my girlfriends about making it two whole days without tears!) But the adrenaline has started to wear off. Suddenly, weekends feel hollow without our family’s Sunday routine. Turns out it’s not just the drop-off that’s tough, it’s the days after when the quiet gets louder. That’s why Penn and I are so grateful to sit down with New York Times bestselling author, podcaster, and speaker Gretchen Rubin, one of my favorite voices on happiness and habits this week.

Gretchen says this season isn’t an “empty nest,” it’s an open door—a time of possibility, connection, and, yes, some grief mixed with growth. We talk about how to cope when the wine and cake aren’t cutting it, how to replace old family traditions with new ones, and why weekends can feel especially heavy. Gretchen also gives us permission to create new rituals, like her idea of a buffercation—a post-drop-off trip that softens the blow.

We also dive into parenting identities, the joy (and limits) of constant kid updates, and why sometimes one parent has to cry while the other holds it together. It’s heartfelt, it’s hopeful, and yes, there are squirrel picnic tables involved. So if you’re in the stage of life where the house feels too quiet, this episode might just help you reframe it—not as an ending, but as an open door to what’s next. We love to hear from you, leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. You can also watch our podcast on YouTube.

  • How To Fix Youth Sports with Greg Olsen
    Sep 9 2025

Being a parent in youth sports is… a lot. One day you’re cheering on your kid for picking clovers in the outfield, the next you’re asking yourself: “Is my kid… special?” and googling special clinics in the area. We’ve been through the highs and lows, and that’s why we were so excited to sit down with former NFL All-Pro and award-winning broadcaster Greg Olsen in today’s show. Greg is on a mission to make youth sports healthier and more balanced through his platform Youth Inc. He knows both sides of the game: he was part of that 0.02% who actually made it to the pros, and now he’s a dad coaching kids in today’s pressure-packed youth leagues.

We talk about what’s broken (spoiler: it’s mostly us parents), how to keep sports fun for kids, and what Greg would do if he were the “czar” of youth sports. He also shares how he personally dealt with career setbacks (yes, even after Super Bowls and broadcast booths), and why the real goal in sports isn’t the scholarship or the contract—it’s the process of showing up and growing. Stay tuned for Penn’s Top 5 Changes to Youth Sports at the end. Maybe you’ll start keeping Penn points for your kids games! We love to hear from you, leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. You can also watch our podcast on YouTube.

First time listening and this was a much needed conversation. Great job. Will listen again

Fantastic! A much needed conversation

This podcast is so relatable and fun to listen to. There are moments of hilarity but there are also moments of deep emotion. Thought-provoking and fun, great for listening on my walks, while I'm cooking, in the car, and even with my kids (sometimes). Family and relationship thoughts, experiences, and advice.

I love listening to this podcast. So relatable!

I'm not one of those people who can do my work AND listen to a podcast at the same time, which is a real shame because I really enjoy podcasts ... so ever since I started listening to your podcast, my work has begun to suffer. That should be a star or two off but my boss isn't the one writing this review, so ..........

In the latest episode (re: hobbies), I have to say that you are the only other person I have heard who discusses a strong dislike for the word "should". I went through a phase (may still be going through it) where I would respond to all shoulds with an accusation toward the speaker of being a "should-pusher". It doesn't endear me to people, but just know that I get it and I'm glad that you spoke about it because now I don't feel so weird. Right?

So, yea, keep getting in between me and my work - I enjoy it, even if my boss may not.

Pausing work to listen to y'all

It's been a rough year, but I gotta say, stumbling upon the Holderness Family has been one of my favorite parts. I first saw their hilarious song parodies on Facebook a couple of months ago. I was very excited to see they were writing a book, which is how I found out about the podcast! I laugh, and sometimes cry, but I always learn a little something, and get to see things from a new angle. As a newlywed, I strive to have a relationship like Kim and Penn have as the years go by. I love that they share the tools that help them have such an incredible understanding of each other! Thank you so much for being you, and sharing so much of yourselves!

I just love this family!

I really enjoyed your videos and now your podcast. We have learned so much about the experience of living with ADHD from Penn. My son is ADHD and has been able to relate to Penn. Having a family of ADHD (myself, son, and husband) we feel for Kim because it's hard sometimes, but she has such a great approach to understanding it.

Loving the positivity and wellness

First off let me say I love you guys. Second I can not belive I am the first review on here. That can only be because everyone else has already started listening to you on other platforms, because you guys are great I actually started watching dude dad and came across The target husband's video and I discovered your family's videos and I was hooked from there. I have watched all your videos, "read" your book. Wich I am great full for the extra commentary on the audiobook and now for the past couple of days I have been listening to your podcast im up to the end of 2018. I listen to you ten hours a day while I'm at work. My wife and I both have a mixture of both your personalities and you have helped me understand not only my wife but myself. With your inspiration I have started down my own self help and personal growth journey. Keep it up and I can not wait to catch up on your podcast Thank you for everything you guys do. YOUR AMAZING

Okay, I love Penn & Kim, but this speaker was just next level with the knowledge. I think the only thing I didn't like about it is that he stole the show, but I will definitely be listening to this one multiple times. Great job! So glad I could find him through you! :)

By far, the best episode!

Thanks for this. I started listening to you both during the pandemic. I don't listen to podcasts often but am on a long road trip and so glad I started listening! Besides the content being g great, I realized that they are sponsored by Betterhelp which is ironic as I am a therapist with Better help and have recommended your content to clients with ADHD without knowing that they sponsored your Podcast. Keep up the great work!

gratitude and positivity!
