Publisher's Summary

On 30th January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed the German chancellor of a coalition government by President Hindenburg. Within a few months he had installed a dictatorship, jailing and killing his left-wing opponents, terrorising the rest of the population and driving Jews out of public life.

He embarked on a crash programme on militaristic Keynesianism, reviving the economy and achieving full employment through massive public works, vast armaments spending and the cancellations of foreign debts. After the grim years of the Great Depression, Germany seemed to have been reborn as a brutal and determined European power.

Over the course of the years from 1933 to 1939, Hitler won over most of the population to his vision of a renewed Reich. In these years of domestic triumph, cunning manoeuvres, pitting neighbouring powers against each other and biding his time, we see Hitler preparing for the moment that would realise his ambition. But what drove Hitler's success was also to be the fatal flaw of his regime: a relentless belief in war as the motor of greatness, a dream of vast conquests in Eastern Europe and an astonishingly fanatical racism.

In The Hitler Years, Frank McDonough charts the rise and fall of the Third Reich under Hitler's hand. The first volume, Triumph, ends after Germany's comprehensive military defeat of Poland in 1939.

Nothing new here

Didn't learn anything new from this book. Read Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer. Still the greatest account of the Nazis ever written.

Bravo

I will point out one aspect of this audiobook which I regret to say makes it unique among books I’ve listened to recently. THE NARRATOR CORRECTLY PRONOUNCES THE WORDS IN IT! (Even “EVA BRAUN” - surname pronounced “Brown.”) This should be a given but you know that it’s becoming unusual to the extent that it’s almost unheard of these days. For this alone I give the book five stars.

A fantastically well told, chronological timeline of events leading up to the start of the war. Easy to understand and with clear over arching understanding of the greater picture

Enjoyable and informative

well read by Paul Mcgann whose voice doesn't grate over the German phrases, protagonists or events.

Entertaing and well read but nothing new here.

Yet another retelling of the Hitler story with nothing new to say. If you want the story of the build up Ww2 this is as good as any other.

Great overview of events

The history of Nazi Germany simply told. Recounts the facts as scrupulously as possible and largely leaves the interpretation to the reader. No prior knowledge at all is assumed which is helpful if you have managed to forget as much as I have! Excellent narration by Paul McGann, a welcome break from the standard public school voices routinely used for history books.

Good listen

Excellent insight into the early years. Adds depth for the listener about the workings of hitlers version of control and his handling of other governments.

Interesting chronology!

I found this to be an interesting and manageable chronology of events from 1933-39. As a history teenager with a keen interest in the subject matter, I found lots of interesting and lesser known facts which assisted me to better understand how WW2 came about. I learned a lot about the role played by Chamberlain and the failure of the allies to form an alliance with the USSR when the time was right rather than more or less encourage a non aggression pact and carve up of Poland between Hitler & Stalin. Now for the next volume!
