• Summary

  • This my retelling of the story of England, which is a regular, chronological podcast, starting from the end of Roman Britain. I’m a bloke in a shed, but I make sure this is good, properly prepared history, and then fill it with my enthusiasm. You’ll find the great events and people for sure – but also some of the byways, of how people lived, their language, and the forces that shaped their lives and destinies.(Note iTunes only displays a list of 300 episodes. There are rather more, which all other podcatchers DO list).

The Elizabeth and Jacobean age was a time of social mores and the way England was ruled - and the great medieval household withered away. To leave something smaller, more symmetrical - and of extraordinary beauty. And then there's also Little Moreton Hall, a gentry interpretation of the Great Rebuilding.

Somewhere in the 16th and 17th centuries, ordinary people started building differently - private buildings, public buildings. They used brick, glass, decoration and portraiture; and it wasn't just the aristocracy; Yeomen, merchants, towns, husbandmen. The historian W G Hoskins gave it a name - the Great Rebuilding

A funny and soothing presence

Love this podcast for its wit and personality. David Crowther makes me want to take up gardening and buy a shed (I probably need to be a homeowner first but these details can all be sorted). As a Yankee there is something Pythonesque about English history and David captures it without losing the serious historical content in the humor. I wish him the very best of health and happiness and hope he keeps plugging away.

Best style you can find.

Great style of history telling. I love how we are given a nice telling of events without a drudgery of dates and names unless it cannot be helped.

By far the best history podcast I have ever found.

"The History of England" is always an educational and enjoyable listen!

You learn about English history but also about the way society and government grows and changes generation by generation.

Brilliant

David's genial style is really easy to listen to. He doesn't get bogged down in any academic historical debates, just provides an easy to follow narrative with occasional opinions that are always measured.
