“Anything is possible for women as we find our voice, honor our identity, work together for a common goal, and stand unapologetically with our arms wide open to the skies in a stance of pride and acknowledgment of the sacredness of the feminine.” (from the preface to the 30th anniversary edition)

The Heroine’s Journey describes contemporary woman’s search for wholeness in a society where she has been defined according to masculine values. Drawing on cultural myths and fairy tales, ancient symbols and goddesses, and the dreams of contemporary women, Murdock illustrates the need for — and the reality of — feminine values in Western culture. This special anniversary edition, with a new foreword by Christine Downing and preface by the author, illuminates that this need is just as relevant today as it was when the book was originally published 30 years ago.

This is very timely. We need to study how these stories work. We need to give ourselves permission to incorporate these into our culture as fully as we’ve incorporated the heroes journey.

We need to know the stories. They need to appear in our films and literature.

A book everyone should read when they are ready to receive it. I have found it resonates with so many and is a beautiful outlay of our ongoing growth path.

An Essential Read

I was captivated by this book from the start until the finish. I felt all the years of confusion and trauma I’d carried finally make sense and be the voice of reason I needed to hear. I want to thank Maureen Murdock for the gentle and powerful way you delivered this difficult delivery of truth that some of us have had to take on. The narration was calm, so beautifully paced and spoken with a truth and an understanding that no one has ever been able to give me. I am definitely listening to the audiobook again, I even said that to my partner before the book was complete. I’ve shared so many parts to him while I’ve been going through it and the timing of this showing up in my life couldn’t have been more in alignment of my journey.

A beautiful visual story of the feminine archetype

Having been familiar with Campbell's Hero's Journey for many years, encountering the Heroine's journey was such a pleasant surprise and showed me how there are so many narratives out there that are male-oriented. Although some aspect felt a little outdated and having had a positive and loving mother daughter relationship myself, I could not relate to some parts, it was still deeply insightful about women and men, the forgotten female in us all as humans and in the world and how to reconnect with it. Definitely recommend!

Eye-opening
