Publisher's summary

Owen Loughman is a highly decorated Navy SEAL who has a thirst for action. But there's one thing he hasn't been able to forget: his high school sweetheart, Natalie. After more than a decade away, Owen has returned home to the ranch in Texas for a dangerous new mission that puts him face-to-face with Natalie and an outside menace that threatens everything he holds dear. He'll risk it all to keep Natalie safe - and win her heart.

Natalie Dixon has had a lifetime of heartache since Owen was deployed. Fourteen years and one bad marriage later, she finds herself mixed up with the Loughmans again. With her life on the line against an enemy she can't fight alone, it's Owen's strong shoulders, smoldering eyes, and sensuous smile that she turns to. When danger closes in, how much will she risk to stay with the only man she's ever loved?

Critic reviews

"Grant grabs the reader by the throat early on with a plausible and suspenseful plot, characters readers will root for, and snappy prose, and she doesn't let up until the cliffhanger ending. This first-class thrill ride will leave readers wanting more." ( Publishers Weekly)

Natalie and Owen

The history these characters have played a huge part in their HEA. Being forced to interact years later bring up new feelings and also old hurts.

You can’t really blame Natalie for wanting to keep Owen at a distance but chemistry and fate have other plans.

Owen kind of seemed pissed the whole book unless he was getting some.

The mystery/suspense was the best part of this book for me. I wished we had gotten Orren back, it’s really the only part of the story I want to know more about.
I won’t be continuing the series; I might go looking for spoilers.

I found the narrator so so, her female voice was fine emotionless but not terrible. For me it was her male voices she made them sound mad and her southern accent gave the character a dumb feel. I don’t know, I have listened to other books by this narrator and I don’t recall it being like that.

Decent start to Sons of Texas series

In this interesting series opener, author Donna Grant introduces the Loughman family, a father and three sons, all dedicated military men whom have sworn to serve and protect the United States of America.

However, the patriarch Orrin has been kidnapped and the sons, Wyatt, Owen and Cullen have been tasked by the government to find and rescue him. The plot unfolds revealing a dastardly plan for world domination that boasts enemies with access into the highest levels of multiple governments.

This book had the Russians versus United States rivalry, a secret illuminati-ish group, Texans who own a horse ranch, an estranged family and a second chance at love.
This particular installment focused on the middle son, Owen, as he tries to discover who kidnapped his father as well as coming to terms with the damaged relationship with his first love Natalie Dixon.

The pace of this story was pretty quick as the story evolved rapidly. The author kept us in the dark for most of the novel regarding the true identity of the bad guys. Instead, the reader was exposed to why the Loughman family was estranged and why Owen and Natalie broke up fourteen years go.
I liked the heroine as she had tried her best to move on with her life. She had inner strength and she was clearly intelligent. Owen was clearly a man who excelled at his job as a navy seal. He also appears to be an honorable man, though I was perplexed as to why three decent men treated their father so dreadfully for so long. I hope the author spends time addressing the sub plot because it did lower my esteem of the Loughman sons.

I enjoyed this story because this plot was interesting and I was curious to find out more about the weapon, the enemy and the family. I hope the author continues to develop the plot and characters with the same pace in Book 2.

Love This Hero

The Hero by Donna Grant is the first book in her new Sons of Texas series. Readers are immediately immersed in the suspense, then slowly enchanted with romance. There is a lot going on as the author introduces her world and by the end, I was ready to read more - I needed to know what happens next. FULL REVIEW on our blog: Guilty Indulgence Review Site.

Okay with a few caveats!

3.5 Stars

If you can suspend reality and are okay with a cliffhanger, this was an enjoyable listen. Wyatt is kind of a punk but the main MCs are likeable. I did not care for the tactic used by the h in order to obtain information almost immediately after she verbally expressed her feelings for the H but it could have been worse. The fact that the bad guy fell for it means that he is TSTL!

OMG!!!

I've read about 60 or 65 of Donna Grant's novels and novellas and I've love everything by her. BUT I can't listen to Carly Robins destroy one of DG's books. I made it to 5% and that's as far as I could go. The voices of Owen, Wyatt, Cullen and Orrin were seriously horrible. Carly can't do a man's voice so she's really NOT a narrator. AND she certainly can't do a Texas accent. It's no
wonder there's so few audible sales. The books are about 3 men but they're narrated by a female, who's lousy. I don't get that at all. I don't know who chose this narrator but they need to find a different job.

Loved the action! Loved the drama and just the right amount of love scenes. Not too much not too little. Start book 2 The Protector! Will recommend.
