Story
Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town.

My 6 year old daughter loves this book.
So I had originally rated this book 3 stars but in light of my daughters obsession with listening to this book over and over and over and over and over and over....(ad nauseum) I felt I needed to bump up the rating to 4 stars. I am not exaggerating when I say that she has been listening to this book every night as she goes to sleep for over a month. She just keeps listening to it again and again. From my viewpoint, I felt that this book was good but not in the same league as Ms. Cleary's "Romana Quimby series". These, I believe, are Ms Cleary's first attempts at writing, at least they are her first published attempts. They were written back in like the early 1950's, and were written in "modern Portland, OR". What this means is that they are set in early 1950's Portland OR, and as such represent the sensibilities and thought patterns of that time. The result is that the stories are a bit dated, and for today's adult audience a little silly. My daughter on the other hand loves this, she keeps asking me to explain some of the (now defunct and dead) aspects of that society...what she calls "the olden times"...for example I found myself explaining what a phone booth was.....
The writing and storytelling in this series is not as polished or as sharp as Ms Cleary's later works but it is still good. Mr. Harris' performance on the other hand is actually quite entertaining and was one of my favorite parts of listening to this book. I don't think many adults will love this book, it is simply too dated. But that being said, I certainly did not mind listening to it in the car with my daughter (at least the first time) and my daughter LOVES it, so in the end I give it my recommendation.

Love it so far, except...
We haven't finished this book yet, but my son loves listening to the adventures of Henry and Ribsy while we're driving. We often have to sit in the driveway to finish a chapter. My only complaint, just minor, is the switching of narrators. I'm sure my 5 yo didn't mind, but I would have liked just one, preferably Neil Patrick Harris.

Wonderful for children
Our children (ages 7 and 9) have listened to the entire Henry Huggins collection two years in a row and they have loved it from start to finish both times. Cleary's stories are full of real-life adventure. Characters face the problems of growing up and gaining independence. They make decisions and love with them. They deal with grown ups. They work toward goals. They put up with each other and find ways to get along. These stories are beautiful and they encourage out kids to have a positive attitude.

Great for Road Trips
Would you listen to The Henry Huggins Audio Collection again? Why?
My 7 year old son loves this book and listens to it over and over. We've had this book for a few years now. The 1st time I put it on, he wasn't too thrilled because he wanted to watch a movie, but he ended up loving this collection of books.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Henry Huggins Audio Collection?
My son's favorite story is the one where Henry and Ribsy go fishing with his dad.
What does Neil Patrick Harris and William Roberts bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
My son likes Neil Patrick Harris' narration the best.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It's a collection of 5 books.
Any additional comments?
Not only are these books entertaining, but they also provide a positive message. The kids in these books play outside with their friends, they have to earn money to buy the things they want, and they have responsibilities.

Hours of Listening Fun!!
Would you listen to The Henry Huggins Audio Collection again? Why?
We first heard one of these books when we got it at the library and instantly fell in love with how Neil Patrick Harris read it. I found this collection for my daughter for Christmas to go with her new Kindle. She has listened to this book numerous times already. Good thing it is digital because she literally would have worn certain parts out because she loves certain characters so much. I highly recommend this collection to anyone young and old!!!

Awesome for screen-loving kids
With many long car rides through the summer, we had little distractions for our screen-hungry 5 and 8 year olds.
The first book was marginally received... But to our relief, we all enjoyed the books and couldn't wait for car rides to hear about his stories! Even mom and dad! Surely some stories were aged, but fantastic nonetheless. And Neil Patrick Harris' rendition was fabulous!! Highly recommend!!

Excellent with one exception.
This is so good! Neil Patrick Harris reads everything except the 2nd book on this recording. The guy who reads that is sub-par; my kids didn’t seem to mind, but it was painful to endure. NPH reads all the others & does a fantastic job!!!
