Do you ever feel like you have something special to offer the world? Something that only you can bring to the table?

With your unique talents, past experiences, and passions, you can make something totally new.

Is it a novel? Is it a screenplay? A Michelin-star restaurant? Maybe it's the next billion-dollar app, or a world-changing non-profit.

Whatever it is, it's your art. And it's just waiting to get out of you. All you have to do is start.

In The Heart to Start, David Kadavy takes you through his journey from cubicle-dweller to best-selling author, showing you how to systematically break through creative resistance, overcome perfectionism, and bring your work into the world.

  • Catch yourself "Inflating the Investment", and learn how to find the time to follow your art, even if you feel like you don't have the time.
  • Bust through writer's block by overcoming "The Linear Work Distortion."
  • Use your own procrastination to your advantage with "Motivational Judo."

The examples are woven amongst the stories of great creators. From Maya Angelou to Seth Godin. From J. K. Rowling to Steven Pressfield. You'll hear from a Hollywood screenwriter, a chef, and even a creator of a hit board game.

The world needs your work, so don't wait. Listen now, and find the time, motivation, and confidence to make your art real.

Guide with a good points backed up by own exp.

Guide with a good points backed up by authors skin in the game. Well this book is mostly authors experience. Something like more comprehensive 5s rule from Mel Robins for me with Mark Mansons "the work behing all of that (being a rock star for example) that you dont want to do" (no actually this part I inserted there myself a bit). I wrote some stuff into the review of How to Write a book and this book is kind of more psychologicaly/philosphically oriented extension of that (and I think those philosophical/psychological/esthetic statements are not well/in-depth enough built for me). Its quite short, but comprehensive, not much sauce added up. Overall great tools and tips, I am personally fan of many tools David uses and recommends (and GTD is the biggest even if not mentioned in this book). Heart to start is the first part of the journey (I personaly like the concept of ready, fire, aim - not that much mentioned too), then you have to persist (by building a habit) and in some ventures learn how to start again and again (most successful people are actually persistent more than talented in many cases, some got luck, some got mix of all). By now my rating is 3.9 stars for me. - those advices are great, but not entirely new, but I really like they are backed up by Davids personal experience. But I got a little bit of feeling that there is probably too much packaging in comparison to the actual content. Yet in this particular review my ego is involved in the rating: I have the same urge to express myself, debilitating perfectionism and similar procastination+alike problems as the author thou authors ego triggers me a bit and probably it could be only projection.

Great information

This book shares great information, if at times presented judgmentally. While often read conversationally, which is delightful, parts of the book sound as if they might be digitally assembled. There is just a fraction too much time between words in every chapter heading and quote, making it a bit uncomfortable.

Just what I needed!

I kept finding myself thinking “wow, that’s exactly what’s going on in my head”. If the title got your attention, this book is for you! It is simple and deep at the same time, ultra concise and to the point. If you’re stuck, this might be a life-changer.

When you need a little encouragement!

This book surprised me as being a great "pump me up" resource. Even the semi-nerdy voice of the author gave the stories legitimacy. Instead of a paid actor the candid honesty, and yes sometimes monotone, voice of the author was soothing. I recommend this book and encourage you to find the heart to start.

Inspirational and Useful

Very good quotes, examples, true life stories. Lots of examples and stories that I have experienced and from which I have already drawn the same conclusions. Especially good for people starting out but an encouragement for those with experience to keep at it.

Inspirational

Positive and motivational. It helps jumpstart a stuck mindset. A quick read, but does the job.

The idea of non linearity is huge!

I loved the “multiple books on a table” metaphor. That has been my biggest obstacle, thinking only in terms of linear steps. Meanwhile my wife is skilled at simply taking action whenever she has a spare segment. So, she’s the published author! I rest my case :-)

Some good ideas based on the author’s personal experiences. Performance is weak.

This book contains some good ideas that are based on the author‘s personal experience with getting started on various projects. I found it useful, although not deeply profound. The primary weakness in the book is the performance by the author. It is rather stiff. He should learn to just explain what he is saying as if he were talking to someone in person. Rather than read (pause) ing (pause) it (pause) ever (pause) so (pause) carefully (pause).
