Publisher's Summary

USA Today bestselling author Julia London, "a gifted and versatile author" (Publishers Weekly), introduces a sexy, wildly romantic and emotionally charged new trilogy in which three aristocratic young ladies, upon discovering they are destitute, resort to desperate means to keep up appearances...and find the husbands of their dreams.

When the young ladies of the Fairchild family learn that their stepfather has absconded with their late mother's fortune, Ava, the eldest, hunts down the notoriously wealthy rakehell Jared Broderick, the Marquis of Middleton and heir to a dukedom.

Much to her shock and delight, the marquis sweeps her into a whirlwind romance and proposes marriage. But after their passionate wedding night, Ava discovers Jared has ulterior motives of his own. Not only does he expect her to deliver an heir while he continues to enjoy a rogue's life, but Ava also suspects she is a pawn in her husband's quest for revenge. Marriages of convenience work for some, but for Ava a loveless bond won't do. So she devises a bold plan to confront her husband's demons so that he might be free to choose to give her his heart for the right reason: because she is the only woman he will ever truly desire.

Captivating and delightful

My first reaction to this book was WOW. I loved how the story began followed up with the challenges presented after the marriage. The storyline was very creative and definitely kept my interest the entire book. Very refreshing indeed. Love the fact that Julia London does not waist the reader’s time writing about each character’s ridiculous mind babble and relationship and personal insecurities. It is so refreshing to read a story completely focused on developing characters so that every moment is filled with something that actually adds to the experience. I highly recommend it although this narrator, I feel, takes a bit away from the story because when she talks it’s as if she has something in her mouth.

Strange Book

Three quarters of the way through this book, I suddenly wondered if Audible had switched books on me. It started out well enough. Ada, our Heroine is left penniless and alone and Jared, our Hero must make a suitable match before his father forces him to wed a woman he knows he'll be miserable with. He has a mistress that he adores and wants to spend the rest of his life with. Suddenly, after sharing a brief kiss with Ada, he's dumped the mistress for no reason that I could fathom and he breaks all the rules of society to hurriedly marry Ada.

There's absolutely no chemistry between our H&H. Frankly, there doesn't even appear to be any attraction.

I've read several of Ms London's books and I never remember any of them being this disjointed and uninteresting.

Don't waste your time on this one. If Anne Flosnik coulnd't save it for me, it couldn't be salvaged.

Has potential but no follow through

I was really excited to listen to this but unfortunately was let down. The narrator speaks very quickly and seems to know how to do two voices and to not even know how to do them well. And while the story is interesting the characters make it horrible. Not only is their no redeemable quality in them all the characters are annoying and immature. I suggest saving yourself the credit, money or time and picking another book.

Terrible hero & heroine

this is so awful I don't know what to say. The h/h have no chemistry, personality or anything that makes you like them. I think they do deserve each other as they would just make 2 people miserable and not 4. I just could not find any romance, love or affection. I am at the 7 hour mark and just don't have a clue as to why they are together. I have never read a story where I am voting for divorce....and quick , as I can't take much more of the hero being such a thoughtless jerk!! I am just glad I got this as part of the romance Package, so there is no great expense returning it and trying something better ( which at this point could just be a phone book, which would be more romantic).
I don't know if it gets better at the end, as I just can't finish it...and will not be trying the other books in this series.

The narrator is not good, so even that detracts from the book. As other reviewers have written, AF really needs to learn how to pronounce "f". I have an f-word that could describe this book!

A desperate duke too!

Anne Flosik delivered her exactingly reliable and expected performance. She never changes and can be expected to deliver.
Julia London fans will very much like this story as it too delivers as always. London seasons, country estates, dowries, ranks and arranged marriages with relationship twists, emotional angst and maybe a little villiany or a little treachery and you have a historical romance. That is all as it should be... and tied in a bow of satisfactional enjoyment. Whats not to like?

CREDIT worthy, yes, especially if you're a Julia London fan.

HEAT factor, 4, driven with steamy and mostly explicit moments and enough sexual tension to keep it interesting.

A TOUCHING BATTLE OF TWO HEARTS

I'm a sucker for a Duke romance and, even though he's actually only a Marquise, it thankfully delivered all that I was hoping for. JL smoothly whisked me away to the Ballrooms of 1819 London where her descriptive passages enabled me to envisage the gowns, the flickering candles, the whispering ton and the first meeting between the fated H/H.

Lord Jared is a handsome self-assured Rake (and oh how I love them) who's Father, the current Duke, is trying to force him to marry a high ranking woman he has chosen for Jared but there's deep rooted conflicts and anger between him and his Father and he refuses the match but not the purpose of a marriage - to get an heir. Then across the Ballroom he sees a woman that just might do. However, after their first all too brief but passionate first meeting it's a year before they meet again because of tragic circumstances. Lady Ava is beautiful, kind, thoughtful and loves her Sister and Cousin very much and when her Stepfather has left them virtually penniless she knows she must do something about it.

So starts a marriage of convenience between them both with Ava hoping for much much more but Jared's emotionally damaged heart is unable to give it which results in a push n pull of conflicted desires except in the bedroom... where there's harmony. The two battle it out with the aid of her Lady's Maid who's a humorous but all knowing ex Harlot but there's hindrances and insecurities because of a besotted female friend and a determined ex Mistress.

Worth a credit? It was, as so many HR's are, predictable but it's the journey in getting to the delicious HEA that's important and this one captured me from the start and had me rooting for both the likeable H/H. It also had a wealth of other interesting characters, there was a good dose of quibbles, tiffs and arguments which was thankfully followed by romance, passion, lust and sex. It entertained, amused and kept me hooked so YES a very nice and creditworthy listen.

Wonderful!

If you like historical romance novels of the aristocracy, You will enjoy this book. You feel the pain, joy, and sadness of a 'marriage of convenience'. Anne Flosnik is one of the best narrators. I am on to the second of the books in the series.
