Publisher's Summary

Sometimes the dead reach back....

Leigh Harker’s quiet suburban home was her sanctuary for more than a decade, until things abruptly changed. Curtains open by themselves. Radios turn off and on. And a dark figure looms in the shadows of her bedroom door at night, watching her, waiting for her to finally let down her guard enough to fall asleep.

Pushed to her limits but unwilling to abandon her home, Leigh struggles to find answers. But each step forces her towards something more terrifying than she ever imagined.

A poisonous shadow seeps from the locked door beneath the stairs. The handle rattles through the night and fingernails scratch at the wood. Her home harbours dangerous secrets, and now that Leigh is trapped within its walls, she fears she may never escape.

Do you think you’re safe?

You’re wrong.

Very Disappointing

I love almost all of Darcy Coates' books, and the couple I wasn't thrilled with, I finished and understood they just weren't for me.

This book is just confusing. I'm not sure what the intent is, literary horror? Unfortunately, it doesn't work. It's like a first draft where she's still working out the kinks, tossing around the ideas. I skipped to the very last chapter and then went back to the beginning with what I thought was a grasp of where the story was going, but still couldn't get into it. There are very few books that can survive on one character's interior dialogue, and this isn't one of them.

Sorry, but I'll be returning it.

Terrifically Terrifying!

I'm the type of person who can figure out the plot of a novel within the first 2 chapters. After that I become horribly bored.
Not with this book. Darcy Coates is so masterful in her execution of The Haunting of Leigh Harker, that I was puzzled, and terrified, the entire way through this twisting and turning novel. I'm not easy to please, but this novel surpassed my expectation tenfold.
The narrator is absolutely perfect. She breathes a lot of suspense into the novel.
well done!

Just boring

A woman alone in her house hears noises. Six chapters later and nothing else has happened. I really liked the Ashburn House book by this author but Haunting of Leigh Harker is a huge disappointment, and waste of money.

Wow - I could not put this down until the end!

The story held me on the edge of my seat from the first sentence! I listened in one day! The way the storyline was told, the details, the expert narration (every character so real and as I would have imagined them if I have been reading the text myself) - every aspect - just amazing!

Repetitive

This book was okay. I feel like a lot of time was wasted droning on and on about the same things. I think at one point I even stated out loud, “We get it!”.
The reader was good. That’s the main reason for the 3 stars. The story is 2 stars.

Very solid Ghost Story

Decent twists and enough mystery to make this enjoyable. I liked the somewhat fluid nature of the world/rules. A few intense and memorable scenes no real graphic violence.

The first act ramps up quickly. It starts fast and doesn’t slow down until the second act changes the scope. The second act is carried heavily by the mysteries and there is much less tension. I suspect that is where a lot of people who didn’t like the book drew the line. The third act was solid albeit a bit low stakes.

Definitely recommended if you want supernatural tension built around a series of mysteries. If you not interested/invested in the mysteries it’s going to be a tough sell on the last 2/3 of the book.

I enjoyed Darcy’s writing style and the narration.

Not what I expected

I am very familiar with Darcy Coates novels. She is by far one of my favorite authors. This book was very different from what I am accustomed to. It was hard getting into it but the story line had me hooked so I kept returning. It was very descriptive, more than I needed, and at times I found it too much and would get bored. But again…..the story line pulled me back. It was a great read all in all and I am glad I stuck with it. It took me longer than usual to finish the book but was worth it.

This wasn't what I expected But it was a good story. It had the point of view of the ghost. Enjoyed the narrator, she did a good job.

Masterful story telling

Fantastic narrator. Darcy Coates has an amazing way of getting the reader lost in the story with such great detail you feel you're there. That being said, this novel wasn't my favorite of hers but i'm glad I got to read (listen) it.

I don't understand the good reviews

I have really enjoyed several of Darcy's earlier books and love a good haunted house story. This story feels like it drags on an on. I think it would have been a much better book if there wasn't so much repetition. I skipped two chapters and it still felt like nothing had happened. I don't need ten hours of a whiny MC wandering around "afraid" of what's lurking in the shadows of a house she's lived in for 15 years.

The premise was ridiculous, the MC whiny and boring and the story was way too long for what it was.

Complete waste of a credit

I read the reviews and wonder if the authors were listening to a different book. This is the most boring and dreadful book I have ever listened to or read. It’s slow slow story bu chapter 8 was repetitive and very boring. I persevered until chapter 8 as some reviews said it takes a few chapters to get into the book … they were wrong .. simply awful

Spine chillingly amazing!

Get past the first few chapters, trust me! And from there on, it's head spins and dizzy spells, but in the best way possible.
I've always enjoyed Darcy Coates' books but this one, perfect for spooky season, gets you right in the mood for Halloween!

Phenomenal Ghost Story

From the first to the last page I was transfixed. What a phenomenal story, superbly narrated, well written and one of the best page turners I’ve read in a long time. If you love ghost stories this is one of the best by far. We’ll done to author and narrator 👏👏👏👏
