Publisher's summary

After tragedy strikes, Callie Sinclair is left with a gift she never wanted - the ability to communicate with ghosts. But when a desperate widow begs for her help, she reluctantly agrees to investigate the strange occurrences at Hillwood Farm. She quickly realizes she’s dealing with a dangerous presence beyond anything she’s ever experienced, and something else becomes equally clear - the only other living person in the house, Mrs. Turner’s handsome grandson, thinks she’s a scam artist. While she’d prefer to just ignore him, her heart beats a little faster every time he’s nearby.

Luke Turner doesn’t believe in spirits. He’s moved back to restore the family farm, but living on the property serves a dual purpose - he can watch out for his grandmother. He’s not happy about the sudden appearance of a self-described psychic, or his inexplicable attraction to her. His initial suspicions crumble as evidence points to an actual haunting, but he’s still determined not to fall for Callie - the past has taught him it’s best to avoid relationships.

As Callie is drawn deeper into the mystery, she becomes the target of a vengeful spirit, and Luke can no longer fight his feelings for her. Unable to resist their desire, passion ignites…even as the paranormal activity escalates to a final deadly confrontation.

The Haunting of Hillwood Farm

With the varying stories told about ghosts, how would you know where to start if you had one haunting you and your family? How would you know who it was unless they revealed themselves? Obviously, a haunting would typically mean an evil, unwanted, or angry ghost...but what if they aren't meaning to harm you and maybe just can't move on without closure? Knight has a curious paranormal suspense novel with a light touch of romance that will leave readers enticed until the very end.

Alice doesn't want to believe that her recently deceased husband is trying to reach out to her from the beyond. With the sudden paranormal clattering of dishes, wall fixtures, and drawers, the frigid breezes occasionally trailing her skin, and misplaced objects around the house, she is forced to come to the realization that something is trying to make their presence known. Is it good or evil though? Alice isn't sure what to think, so she contacts someone who might be able to help. Callie comes with a lot of baggage of her own, but her heart is in the right place and she knows that she can get to the bottom of this ghost haunting business at the farm. Maybe helping Alice will also help Callie move on with her own life and finally force her to stop living in the past...where the love of her life was still alive. Upon arrival at the farm, Callie immediately feels an irresistible connection to Alice, the farm, and Alice's nephew...Luke. Not ready for a relationship anytime soon, Callie knows that if she doesn't keep her heart guarded, Luke may very well steal it forever. And...if they don't watch their step, the ghost could latch onto them.

Knight does a beautiful job with her story-telling. The scenes are vividly described, the pace is steady and the flow is just right. Since this review is complimenting the audiobook, James' narration is a wonderful rendition of the characters and the story that Knight wants to relay to her readers. It appears that the story is well-written due to the effortless narration. If you are a reader of paranormal suspense, you may want to look into this one.

Believable ghost story

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it grabbed my attention from the very beginning. The chills started within the first few minutes, and I probably shouldn't have been listening to it in bed with the lights out.

I liked that the events in the book seemed realistic, or as realistic as a ghost story can be. The progression of each supernatural experience progressed in a good way too. It didn't go from zero to 60 right away. It was nice to build up to the conclusion.

The love story line was good too. It felt natural and not forced. That said, I typically like a little more focus on the romance, so it could have had more of that.

The narrator was excellent. I normally like duel narrators, but Kristin James did a great job changing her voice for each character.

I definitely would recommend this story to any supernatural lover.

The Haunting of Hillwood Farm

After a near death experience Callie starts to experience things form the other side. She meets Mrs. Turner who wants her to find out if their is a ghost at the family farm. Mrs. Turner's grandson, Luke, is a total skeptic, but will soon learn that perhaps something is out their. I liked that this was a new thing for Callie and that she had to come to terms with things on her own. Perhaps if this becomes a series she will find a mentor. Kristin James does a fantastic job with the narration.

Romance, suspense and intrigue...and a ghost!

I am not a huge paranormal fan, but when it comes to ghost stories, I love them!Kathryn Knight can write a story that sucks me in and keeps me listening. This gem starts with Callie. She was in an accident and now has the gift to be able to talk to the dead. But is this really a gift? She is willing to help Alice Turner, recently widowed try and talk to her husband. Strange things are happening at their house, and if she can only talk to him, maybe it will calm down. What she finds out will blow your mind! Luke, Alice's grandson doesn't believe in all this paranormal stuff, but that does not stop his attraction to Callie. When things heat up, life at Hillwood Farm gets a little scarier! I love all the characters in this one. Knight gives Callie and Luke a slow burn to their relationship, which fits the story perfectly. But my standout is Alice. I love her. She is a sweet lady and with the things happening around her, I just want to hold her close and keep her safe! What a great grandparent. All in all, the high suspense, the finding the bottom of the mystery and the budding relationship will keep you entertained til the end.

Kristin James knocks this book out of the park. She is a voice I love to listen to, Her voice is smooth, and her distinguishing characters all come to life as she reads. She can go from the 25 year old Callie to the senior citizen Alice flawlessly and keep the story flowing. Her ability to inflect the suspense is perfect and gave a very enjoyable performance of this book.

Intriguing

I was not expecting this book to be so intriguing. Written very well, it keeps you on your toes as to “who done it”. Good characters and great chemistry.

Great Ghost Story!!

This is a Pleasant (mostly) Ghost story. We start out with a Woman who has been through quite a bit in her past and a accident that left her with a Ability she is not sure she believes. Asked by a woman of a friend of hers, she goes meets a older Lady who is looking for help with some strange things happening in her home.
Narrator had a Wonderfully Pleasant Voice and did a Great job with the characters.

Not a bad read at all

As a long time fan of Kathryn Knight, I will say that it's not the best of all her novels, but as always, she doesn't disappoint! You will easily connect with the characters and the story they are telling! The whole story behind it is both compelling and suspenseful. You can't help but wonder who is the one responsible for the Haunting of Hillwood Farm... and when the truth is revealed, you will definitely be surprised!

A sweet romance buds while looking into a haunting

*I was given this free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I love listening to Kristin narrate. Her voice feels so relaxing, even when things are strained between characters or in the setting, and the strain is in the characters when they speak. She makes it easy for me to hear the difference between characters by giving them different tones and sounds to their voices. I love this! It helps me keep who's speaking separate as the story moves along. Her pacing is easy to follow as well, no rush to any of the words.

The story has me interested with events that are happening, directing us to what we are to think. I'm kept curious as to the haunting and why. I began to suspect who I thought the ghosts were, and I was thrilled to learn that I placed all the clues properly.

There is a brewing romance here too. It's a short time for the two characters to fall for each other, but I found I accepted the growth of their love. It fits and feels natural for them as the story goes. Lovely writing of their emotions.

Callie is an interesting character as after an accident she could hear the dead speak. This is a special case for Callie as now she's feeling, hearing, and seeing the ghosts! Callie doesn't know much about her ability to hear the dead, but she is willing to help Alice Turner with what she feels is a haunting at her farm. Callie's instincts are right.

I found I liked, very much liked, the style of writing Kathyrn has. Her descriptions tell much, rather than using a generic words. For instance she used "his words rang with quiet determination" instead of simply saying 'said.' I love this! No adverb, no generic word. She used something that described so much more than his words.

I was so pleased with all the elements in this story. Yes there is a haunting, but I didn't feel like it was scary or be a horror piece. I loved this take on the story. It also is a beautiful start to a lovely romance. Totally a winner for me and it makes me curious about more of Kathyrn's works.

finding the ghost was not expected ...quick clean

Can you fall in love with characters just from what they are willing to do for someone else? Callie was selfless, sweet, understanding, and wiling to do what it took to make sure that she did her all to help. Luke was the skeptical grandson of the sweet older lady that needed answers. Grandma, Callie, and Luke find that they each have some part to play in the haunting going on at the Hillwood Farms and sometimes not all stayed in place.

Kristin James did a good job of allowing you to feel part of the story from beginning to end. Finding a balance and getting the the culprit was a little suspenseful.
