Publisher's summary

Peter Hook, as co-founder of Joy Division and New Order, has been shaping the course of popular music for 30 years. He provided the propulsive bass guitar melodies of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and the bestselling 12-inch single ever, 'Blue Monday' among many other songs. As co-owner of Manchester's Hacienda club, Hook propelled the rise of acid house in the late 1980s, then suffered through its violent fall in the 1990s as gangs, drugs, greed and a hostile police force destroyed everything he and his friends had created.

This is his memory of that era and 'it's far sadder, funnier, scarier and stranger' than anyone has imagined. As young and naive musicians, the members of New Order were thrilled when their record label Factory opened a club. Yet as their career escalated, they toured the world and had top ten hits, their royalties were being ploughed into the Hacienda and they were only being paid ÂŁ20 per week. Peter Hook looked back at that exciting and hilarious time to write Hacienda. All the main characters appear - Tony Wilson, Barney, Shaun Ryder - and Hook tells it like it was - a rollercoaster of success, money, confusion and true faith.

Deadpan Funny

I'm now in my early 40's so this was my era of clubbing and although I never went I was familiar with the goings on at the Hacienda. Read brilliantly and deadpan funny by the author. Worth a listen to by any northerner of my age who used to go to the early raves and clubs

Is this a book or a leaflet!

What a waste of an audible credit....You can’t have a book that is the same length as a pizza menu!

a must for anybody who remembers the hacienda

For anyone who remembers the Hacienda or even how they think they remember it, this is a must listen.
Manchester of the 80's and 90's was very different from the Manchester of today and the story of the Haciebda embodies a time in the development of the city.
A first hand account of the mad exploits of a group of people who helped define a movement for all its good and bad bits.
Hedonistic, loving and yet violent all at the same time.
The only people to make any money out of the Hacienda were the doormen and the gangs. It says it all.
I don't think anybody else could have narrated this story with the same vibrancy as Pete Hook, maybe with the exception of Tony Wilson, and even then there would have been more flair and less grit. Make no bones about it the Hacienda was a fucking disaster as a business model, but what a story, and we all love a great story.

An absolute pleasure to read

Hooky's an excellent writer, its like being in the pub with a few mates and being told some right tales over a few pints, the Hacienda was Manchesters mecca, nice one lad!

Read From The Heart

Short, sweet and real.
Delivered in a way that made you feel like you were in the Hacienda.

What a mad world they created.

Punchy memoir of a defining club

Hooky delivers his book well. It’s more light-hearted and pacier than other Factory-era material. Not without light and shade, and evokes the era well.

I can vividly remember where I was when I heard of the collapse of Factory… Kurt Cobain tried to steal that thunder.

I enjoyed this book; it doesn’t get bogged-down in details or raking through the ashes. A good look back at the club that had it all.

The Hacienda

Peter Hook's engaging narrative covering his involvement with the ultimately ill fated night club is evocative, poignant, sad and humorous. He tells a fantastic tale and this audio, read by the author, had me hooked.

Not what I expected

I was hoping for a more in depth story about the club itself and this book doesn't cover it enough.

Good but its not a book length

Great story. But shortest audio book in history.
Bare that in mind when ordering this.
