Amazing plot

I underestimated how amazing this book would be......but picking it up for the 1st time and reading all the way to page 100+ without realizing it was a huge surprise. I haven’t done that in awhile. The story doesn’t take forever to start and get you hooked. And it does it all the way to the prologue.

Full of Suspense!

Kept me guessing and not wanting to stop listening. I thought it was one of Fern Michaels’ best. Just when I thought I had it figured out, another plot twist. I very much enjoyed this one. My only complaint would be that I sometimes couldn’t tell who was talking. The narrator was good, just not very good at changing voices for the different characters.

Awful - Spoiler Alerts

First, this book is 12 hours long... but doesn't even start talking about the murder mystery until after 7 hours. The initial 7 hours is filled with back story that has so much unnecessary information.
Then the 2 main characters (one of which is a mystery writer) take until the final hour of the book to catch on and suddenly with less than 20 min the husband had "suspected for some time" but never said anything about his wife being a murderer!
Aside from that there are annoying details:
- the book starts with the main character being born with a port wine birth mark that leaves her "hideous" "a monster". The way the author has the parents talk about their new baby was awful. I thought about quitting the book within the 1st chapter because of this and wish I had.
- The main character's birthmark plays no part in the murder mystery! None. All it did was show how awful the mom was and how it made the main character self conscious. But didn't contribute anything of substance.
- Years later, as a housewarming gift, the main character receives a retired K9 from her best friend. This former police dog ended up at a vet being surrendered. That's impossible. Those dogs are police officers and technically belong to the publically funded police department...someone can't just surrender them.
- the vet himself personally delivers the surrendered (now gifted) shepherd and simply has the recipient "sign on the bottom line". No questions, nothing. What legitimate vet would give away a former police dog to someone with no info??
-This dog gift occurs a week or 2 after her boyfriend of 4 years (who were planning to get married) dies suddenly...and she is so grief stricken...so hits on the vet and asks him to dinner.
-Then they decide the vet has a lot of dogs he's caring for and she lives all alone in her giant 4,000 sq ft house her parents had built for her for college graduation (so ridiculous) that why not bring her 7 more dogs. Again she has never cared for a dog but this vet she's now suddenly dating gives her 8 dogs to care for. (It wouldn't have stuck out so much but the author references these dogs all throughout the book).
-Oh and to help her teach the 8 dogs manners he tells her to roll up a newspaper and hit them when they don't listen. WHAT?! Any vet worth their degree would never tell you that! (At least not since the 90's when this book takes place).
- Within the same chapter the main character "struggles to get up (from the floor and couch)" but there's no mention of why or that it added to the plot. Not the biggest problem but this is another detail that makes this book way too long and boring.
- Lastly the audio narration is bad. It's almost impossible to tell who is talking. Her voice barely changes.
OVERALL I'm more disappointed I wasted 12 hours listening to this than I am that I used an Audible credit. If I wasn't the type of person who HAS TO finish a book once I started I would've quit. I kept hoping it'd get better and it does NOT.

Oof

It started off suspenseful but petered out quickly. Not only was it unrealistic, the villain was known half way through the book. Yet, all these intelligent people, one a mystery writer, didn’t figure it out. Lame.
I only finished it Bc of my OCD and didn’t want to leave an unfinished book.
If you’re looking for underdeveloped characters who speak like they’re on a sitcom & not real life, this book is for you. If you are looking for disappointment, this is for you.

Wonderful Story

This is a great story with many surprises. I started listening and couldn’t stop till I finished. I’m a long time fan of Fern Michaels and the ladies of Pinewood so this book was a big change for me. So enjoyed it.
