Story
During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

surprised I got to the end of this
first start with the positives I like the way the book was put together jumping from one person's perspective to the other.
I really felt this book very tedious the male characters were just so two-dimensional and boring.

What a Huge Let Down after The Hunting Party
I adored "The Hunting Party" and when I saw this promising thriller coming up I preordered it with on the spot and was so looking forward to it - but what a huge letdown.
I liked the structure, telling the story from The Bride, The Groom, The Bridesmaid, The Plus One etc. and the narration was good.
I liked the "10 Little" by Agatha Christie-style format, which "The Hunting Party" also had a feel of and the remote Irish Island was a great setting though hard to believe on a small island that a fortress would be re-purposed as a folly!
But that sadly is only the beginning of the improbabilities which come thick and fast and the whole book just dd not seem to have the effortless flow or brooding atmosphere of the previous "Hunting Party". For starters it is an unlikely venue for a celeb wedding - plus by the sound of these attention seekers, they would have been hoping to sell the pics to the likes of Hello magazine and get all the exposure they could which would be tough on a remote, weather battered island surrounded by choppy seas.
In Chistie's "10 Little" whodunnit and the current seeming glut of new thrillers paying homage to it, there has to be some sort of device to get the guests to their destination ... but really what on earth would be the chances of a glam couple like this not finding a more practical and desirable wedding venue than this one - even if they were being paid to hold it there.
Then as the story unfolds the backstories become so contrived as to be ridiculous - especially bearing in mind that Ireland is the kind of place where it is more one degree rather than six of separation and everyone basically knows who everyone is and secrets are hard to keep.
I did like some of the twists and perhaps if the events that predated the wedding had happened in another continent it might have been more plausible - but people talk and no more so than in Ireland so hard to believe that a secret so big would have not been common knowledge.
Beyond everyone surely knowing everything about everyone, the story just did not keep me hooked and I lost interest and abandoned audiobook long before the "Boats at Midnight" were due ... speaking of which as IF you could get Irish wedding guests to leave at such a ridiculously early hour, sure the party would be just getting going then, murder or no murder!

Well read enjoyable listen
Like the hunting party these books aren’t going to win the booker prize. You have to go into it expecting fairly one dimensional cliche characters and that’s the fun of it! They’re just a bit of guilty pleasure listen. It’s brilliantly narrated and having a different narrater for every character really adds to the story. I also found this to be a much more satisfying ending than the end of the hunting party. Can’t wait for the next one

Great story, great presentation
I really liked the storytelling in this book. And the actors that voiced the characters were very appropriate, many of them sounded a little bit creepy which I think added to the atmosphere of the story.
Some of the storyline, although realistic, was a bit disturbing. A major theme was bullying so be prepared for that if you have any history of it.

I don't quite get it
Good things... Narration was great, I've never listened to a book with a large list of narrators... But it was great.
Good things.. Lots of points of view but you never got lost and they were all working at the same story line so that was great
Also great... The dialogue. No naf or cringy lines. The story flowed
Here is the part that was not so great
Spoiler
If everyone has a reason to kill him it became uninteresting who actually did, cos you are kinda happy for any of them to do it... Its like they all cancel each other out.
Also, it felt like it just ended, I had invested in some of the characters.. I wanted to hear their outcome.
So I don't get all the hype and awards. It didn't do it for me and I don't think I'll rush out to purchase more from the author because I can't trust her with my feelings lol.

Entertaining & surprising
Loved the different readers for the different characters. It really helped keep up with the storyline & not lose track of the characters. A lot of coincidences that seem a bit to much but still loved it
