Publisher's summary

The definitive book on the hunt to find the most ruthless serial killer in Los Angeles' history, told by the fearless reporter who broke the story.

In 2008, Christine Pelisek broke the story of a terrifying serial killer who went unchecked in Los Angeles for decades, killing the most vulnerable women in one South Central neighborhood. In her cover article for LA Weekly, Christine dubbed him "The Grim Sleeper" for his long break between murders. The killer preyed on a community devastated by crime and drugs and left behind a trail of bodies - all women of color, all murdered in a similar fashion, and all discarded in the alleys of Los Angeles.

The case of the Grim Sleeper is unforgettably singular. But it also tells a wider story about homicide investigations in areas beset by poverty, gang violence, and despair; about how a serial killer could continue his grisly work for two decades in part due to society's lack of concern for his chosen victims; and about the power and tenacity of those women's families and the detectives who refused to let the case go cold.

No one knows this story better than Christine Pelisek, the reporter who followed it for over 10 years, and has written the definitive book on the capture of one of America's most ruthless serial killers. Based on extensive interviews, reportage, and information never released to the public, The Grim Sleeper captures the long, bumpy road to justice in one of the most startling true crime stories of our generation.

Chilling but important story

If you love true crime, you will love this. The pacing and narrator were both good. Definitely worth a credit.

Grim, indeed. (In a good way)

If you could sum up The Grim Sleeper in three words, what would they be?

That. Dude. Sucks.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This true crime story is quite different from others I've read. I'd say the main character is almost the South Central community as a whole and that was very fascinating. I also liked that the author focused so much on the victims, rather than just the killer.

What about Inger Tudor’s performance did you like?

She didn't over-act with different characters' voices, which is something that can bother me while listening to some audiobooks.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I think this would be a bit too intense for one sitting.

Any additional comments?

If you're on the fence, I say give it a listen. It took them forever to catch this guy and although there are still a lot of unanswered questions (like WHY), it's good to hear about these families finally getting justice.

A serial killer and a community

This was a great listen and not what I expected exactly. I thought it was going to be a gritty true crime and although it is very focused on the murder cases, it really delves into the multiple victims and their lives. It was refreshing to read something that was so deeply aware of the community in which it takes place. This was as much about social justice as it was about a serial killer and that was a unique, refreshing take for me. I'd like to read/listen to more like this, but I'm not sure it exists!

Riveting Story, brilliant narration!

It was a tough read because of the heart rending subject matter. Inger Tudor did a fantastic job of bringing all of the people involved to life!

Great narration. Story focused on the human aspect of victims and packed full of excellent journalism done over many years of dedication.

Very interesting

My bf and I listened to this book while on a road trip to LA (you know, to get in the zone) and it was overall a good story and very interesting. I wish there was a little more about why the killer did what he did but obviously since it’s nonfiction we can’t get that unless he tells us. But if you like true crime novels, this one is a good one!

Informative and well written

I've never read anything like this and didn't know what to expect. It was sad and depressing but in depth. On serial killer TV shows you get glimpses into the story but with this I felt like I was there on the hunt and in the courtroom. It's interesting to hear ALL the details and bts info. Was kind of like reading a very long news article with all the story instead of clippings. I enjoyed it but think I'll go back to fiction.

Great book and narration.

This gave such an insight into these murder cases. So many details and names throughout the book. It never got confusing, but I had to go back a few times while I was listening to make sure I hadn't missed anything. It is chilling to think about how long he went on murdering before getting caught.

Unbelievable <br />

Loved it! It's hard to believe someone could do all these crimes and get away with it for so long. I do believe if the victims were white we would have heard much more.
