Acerca de esta escucha
Welcome to the RMS Titanic, the world’s largest passenger ocean liner, where no matter your class, you’ll be assured of a comfortable voyage. But unfortunately, we can’t guarantee you’ll make it! You may remember a few things about the Titanic from that big movie or from your history classes, but this book is here to help fill in the blanks. Get ready to learn all about the Titanic, from the creation of the first passenger steam liners in the 1880s, to the construction and ultimate destruction of the Titanic in 1912.
This book will bring to life the Titanic by letting you in on some often overlooked details and letting you ride along with some of the passengers - some who enjoyed their last few days of life on the ship, while others did what they could to survive.
You’ll learn:
- Who is the man responsible for the start of the passenger ocean liner boom?
- Why were the workers on the Titanic almost entirely Protestant?
- What was the name of the Titanic’s mascot cat?
- Who were some of the richest people in the world on board the Titanic, and which of them survived?
- How did some of the passengers on the Titanic become heroes, while others proved to be zeroes?
- What were some of the connections and coincidences the Titanic had with another doomed passenger linger, the Lusitania?
Each chapter of our trivia book is broken up into 15 short sections that will introduce you to major themes, background, and sometimes weird stories surrounding the Titanic. Unlike your high school history teacher, we’re not going to put you to sleep with endless line of dates, countless numbers about the costs, or a whole lot of deep sea technical jargon, but instead we’ll show you the Titanic from a series of different perspectives and themes in a way that landlubbers can understand. To go along with the 15 short break-downs of the war, every chapter also ends with 20 fun facts or bits of trivia, and five questions to test your knowledge on the Titanic.
So put on your lifejacket, strap into a lifeboat, and get ready to learn....

In 1927, while the majority of the township of Bath, Michigan, was celebrating a new primary school - one of the most modern in the Midwest - Andrew P. Kehoe had other plans. The local farmer and school board treasurer was educated, respected, and an accommodating neighbor and friend. But behind his ordinary demeanor was a narcissistic sadist seething with rage, resentment, and paranoia. On May 18 he detonated a set of rigged explosives with the sole purpose of destroying the school and everyone in it.

The history of Iceland began 1,200 years ago, when a frustrated Viking captain and his useless navigator ran aground in the middle of the North Atlantic. Suddenly, the island was no longer just a layover for the Arctic tern. Instead, it became a nation whose diplomats and musicians, sailors and soldiers, volcanoes and flowers, quietly altered the globe forever. How Iceland Changed the World takes readers on a tour of history, showing them how Iceland played a pivotal role in events as diverse as the French Revolution, the Moon Landing, and the foundation of Israel.

On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

One of the largest, fastest, and most beautiful ships in the world, the Andrea Doria was en route to New York from Italy. Departing from the United States was the much smaller Stockholm. On the foggy night of July 25, 1956, 53 miles southeast of Nantucket, the Stockholm sliced through the Doria's steel hull. Within minutes, the sea was pouring into the Italian liner. Eleven hours later, she capsized and sank into the ocean.

The small ship making the Liverpool-to-New York trip in the early months of 1856 carried mail, crates of dry goods, and more than 100 passengers, mostly Irish emigrants. Suddenly, an iceberg tore the ship asunder, and five lifeboats were lowered. As four lifeboats drifted into the fog and icy water, never to be heard from again, the last boat wrenched away from the sinking ship with a few blankets, some water and biscuits, and 13 souls. Only one would survive. This is his story.

With deep affection, and respect, for the weather and all that goes with it, he places us in the heart of the storm, a "biblical tempest" of unimaginable power. He illuminates the bravery and ingenuity of Carlsen and the extraordinary courage that the 37-year-old captain inspired in his stalwart crew.

Historia
A few minutes before midnight on April 14, 1912, the "unsinkable" RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage to New York, struck an iceberg. Less than three hours later she lay at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. While the world has remained fascinated by the tragedy, the most amazing drama of those fateful hours was not played out aboard the doomed liner. It took place on the decks of two other ships, one 58 miles distant from the sinking Titanic, the other barely 10 miles away.

Even if we live within sight of the sea, it is easy to forget that our world is an ocean world. The open ocean, that vast expanse of international waters, begins just a few miles out and spreads across three-fourths of the globe. It is a place of storms and danger, both natural and manmade. And at a time when every last patch of land is claimed by one government or another, it is a place that remains radically free.

On the terrifying, chaotic night of April 14, 1912, while the Titanic was sinking, Bruce J. Ismay, the ship's owner, made a decision that would save his life - and end it. Ismay boarded a lifeboat meant for women and children, and within days became The Most Talked-of Man in the World. Branded a coward, he became a flesh-and-blood embodiment of Joseph Conrad's legendary eponymous character, Lord Jim.

Engrossing and educational.
This book contains a wide variety of facts about Titanic. The only problem I identify with this book is the author's failure to reference historical accounts of the Titanic disaster. He only mentions fictional books, when in fact history-based books on Titanic by other authors exist. I consider The Great Book of Titanic to be an excellent supplement to the classic factual account A Night to Remember by Walter Lord. Rather than focusing primarily on the disastrous night in April 1912, The Great Book of Titanic includes a variety of other facts which are relevant to a full understanding of the ship. Although I have purchased several nonfiction books about Titanic on Audible over the years, The Great Book of Titanic contains some information which I was not previously aware of. I highly recommend this title for those interested in learning about the Titanic!
