Publisher's Summary

A Lovejoy novel. Whilst wondering why certain dealers are bidding themselves into poverty for a fake painting, Lovejoy is invited to check whether antiques being secretly lifted from Venice are genuine. The offer is too good to refuse, but it involves him with a particularly ugly bunch of crooks.

Critic Reviews

"Gash's knowledge of the villainous end of the antiques trade is profound and communicated with enthusiasm and pace . . . Engaging antiques-rogue Lovejoy is an original" ( The Times)

Just couldn't get interested

We gave this 45 minutes and just couldn't get interested. The British TV series was much better.

Back to Italy.

Lovejoy makes a return to Venice, a town that both he, and I suspect Jonathon Gash have a great deal of affection for. This one is a little bit less of an antiques focussed and a bit more mystery focussed, but there's plenty of loving history of the city and it's inhabitants. It lags a little in the middle IMHO, but it's the usual formula that we Lovejoy fans enjoy.

Fenton Stevens is as good as he always is as the narrator.
